Ii don't know, why but in the U.K mainland there seems to be some kind of shame, at showing pride in our Country, and our past. It's a rare event that we get anything like those anniversary stamps they are getting in Gib'.

I think it's all this 'political correctness', where no one wants to be seen to be offending anyone.Even when these events happened hundreds of years ago.

I hate pc, that's why I always welcome the opportunity to stick my foot in my mouth at any given time. Wink Cool That's a shame that it should be that way for your countrymen. I wonder if it's not so much a lack of pride in your countries accomplishments as it's just a reserve of emotion for the majority? And probably the new feelings of ultimate pacifism that have been prevalent these past 40-50 yrs has made it taboo to enjoy the history of your country. The good and the bad that has happened for the past couple of thousand years. It's such a shame. Your country is rich in history. From the Bronze age on up. I thought there were professors of history by the scores over there. Are they vilified also?
Well, I for one who's had family come over here from the ol' sod salute you all! Very Happy Very Happy

Sometimes Political correctness, it seems is just something for rich middle class White people to be "right on" with. They cause all the fuss, the people of other cultures usually are quite laid back about things.

It seems not content with us all being P.C now we have to rewrite our past, and our heros, in some cases erase them totally, so that the current and next generation don't have any idea of their history.

Case In Point

Sir Winston Churchill axed from school history lessons

So they're willing to wipe out everything? Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Even that beautiful statue at Trafalgar Square will be gone if they have that kind of mentality. I don't know, though.....it seems that lots of people put up a stink about stuff that happened hundreds of years of go in our country, too, spinning their wheels over stuff that modern society never had anything to do with. Like the owning of slaves, the slaughtering of indigenous tribes....and seeing how I've got white and NA in me which side am I supposed to get all indignant for? History should be taught, with hopefully both sides told in fair balance. Next people will be expunging Holocaust records from the history books. I feel bad for poor Churchill. People who do great things should never be forgotten nor taken for granted. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
OMG! Just read your blog link and it says they did drop the Holocaust stuff because of offended Muslims! WTF?!? Were the Muslims part of the Nazi brigade also? What the heck do they have to do with the whole unholy mess? Except HATE the Jews? I'm so uniformed! This is why I don't like watching the crappin' news!ARGH! Mad Mad Mad Evil or Very Mad

Seems so odd to me that in this country we dare hardly mention Winston Churchill, yet in the U.S for example there are all kinds of tributes to him.

USS Winston Churchill which as far as i know is the only active U.S. Navy warship named after a foreign dignitary

And a well-deserved honor it is. He was a great man. As I belatedly mentioned in my last post I just now saw the bit in the blog about the non teaching of the Holocaust history, also. This truly angers me. I hate to say this but this world is going to hell in a handbasket if people are so stupid to give in to such shameful bullying tactics. Great Britain used to be a bastion for bravery and honor. I weep for her now. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Melodramatic, but true. Crying or Very sad

I spent over a week in London in the 80's. We got the typical
daytime tourist sights, and got to wander on our own at night.

Isn't there a statue/monument to Nelson in Trafalgar Square?

If so, I saw it, probably took a picture of it, I'm sure I've lost it Arrow

I had a Londoner come in the store today.
She talked funny but said
"We just bought a house here, and have one in London too"

"Mam, we deliver here but not there"

Idea

Those morons! They're not trying to work on a "relevant" program. What they are really doing...is stopping their teaching of history!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

All of "drugs, climate change, and booze" are simply current stuff. It has absolutely nothing to do with HISTORY. Which everyone must be taught or doomed to repeat. Who the #$*&$ wants to repeat WWII anyway?! Glad people are looking into it...

I've heard a bit about Nelson, he sounded like an awesome guy to have on your side!!! Way to go! Cool Cool Cool

There was a survey done in schools about 2-3 years ago where kids were shown photos of "famous people from British history".These included Nelson,Winston Churchill,Henry the 8th, William Shakespere, etc.People who were part of history, and were in the history lessons i was taught at school, not all that many years ago..

Something like 98% of the modern day kids had no idea who these famous people were. Some of them, could not even identify photos of more up to date famous people, like H.M the Queen.

So much or heritage, culture, and the state of education, these days. Wink Wink
