It's begun already!!! No reports have come in yet about any damages to off-shore oil rigs, but the price of gas is skyrocketing here!!!
My mom told me that gas was up to around $5.00 in Michigan. I needed to get gas in my car anyway, so I filled up on the way to her house at $3.79 a gallon. I was listening to the radio on the way there. People were calling the radio station here and reporting gas up to $5.60 a gallon in some places. The damn hurricane hasn't even made landfall yet!!!!!
They are gouging the public because of something that might happen, but no one is sure about. What a crock!!!! Curse the oil companies!!!!
I was just watching the national news (11:30 edition). Ike is expected to make landfall sometime over night. Storm surges in the 15-20 foot range, and it's starting to flood already. We're supposed to get the remnants (in Ohio) overnight on Sunday. Joy...... |

Here in Florida, there is a special hotline number to call if someone suspects a businss of price gauging. It got a lot of folks into serious trouble when H.Andrew went through and later Charlie and the others of the same year. You might check your with your state government to see if they have a similar number to call. |

the price of gas in Tennesee went up to $8.00 a gallon this morning and people are outraged...
The President said in his speech this morning that gas gouging will not be tolerated and the offenders will be prosecuted. They are telling people to take pictures of the signs and the gas stations and there is a hot line set up for people to call and they can report the station that is doing it. $8 is ridiculous and it's not even in a state that got hit!!

The price of gas jumped well over 20c overnight and most gas stations were "out of regular".
Last time when the hurricanes went through here, a lot of them turned the juice off to the regular pumps and forced people to buy premium. In some cases, it turned out that they WERE pumping regular.
Anyone still believes the gas company lies? That still thinks 11 billion per quarter year profit makes sense?
Oh, yeah- I'll believe it when the big companies get hit for price gouging. I remember that they were nailing the smaller companies and individuals, but not the big ones.
(And one "Atta-boy" to Wal Mart- they stopped selling the expensive stuff and had their tanks filled with regular. Price was still over 20c higher than a couple of days ago, however). |

| I understand. Here in Arkansas its 3.99-4.15. On the 12th before I went into work it was 3.20- 3.27 by the time I got off that evening it jumped to 3.99 and up. It annoys me when they do this expecially when the gas was already in the ground before the trucks came. It's sad!!! |

There is an article in the local paper this morning- saying that the increase in prices is due to "market forces".
Translation- they saw an excuse to raise their prices and DID. That's what it boils down to whenever something like that is said.
The neoliberals forget something critical - they keep crying that "Free Markets Fix Everything"- but the "market" is not and has never been free.
Unless something happens to break the power of Big Oil, I'd bet we'd be seeing even bigger profits this next quarter, and part of it due to Ike.
And, most of that money goes into the pockets of the top .5% (richest) people in this country.
So next time you gas up, remember that a good chunk of your money goes to make some greedy rich person richer, and that the taxes actually are about 10% of what you're paying. |
