My little sister gave me a wonderfully illustrated book last
Christmas "Where were you when"?
It has 180 unforgettable moments in living history, but
I won't use them all, just these.
Where were you when?
JFK was assassinated?
Challenger exploded?
9/11?
J.R. was shot?....just kidding with that one
History never looks like history when you are living through it |

This is a very interesting book. I can answer every one of those questions.
JFK - Study Hall in school
Challenger exploded - At work watching the lift off of the space shuttle. I witnessed the explosion
9/11 - I was at work when the word got around that the plane had hit the first tower.
JR Shot - Watching Dallas
These were all important dates in our history, except the one about J R being shot.
Especially September 11, 2001, we must never forget about the couragious men and women and children that we lost that terrible day. Remember the families!

Where were you when?
JFK was assassinated? Not alive yet.
Challenger exploded? Not alive yet. (Edit** After a quick wiki, realizing that many folks here my age or younger remember Challenger, I found that date was not in 1980, but was January 28, 1986. I think I remember the adults talking about it, it was big news. But I was only 4, and big news was boring for me so it didn't really register. I do remember them mentioning that a teacher had died. I wasn't sure what a teacher was doing with astronauts.)
9/11? In bed asleep (as I was today too --home sick with a bug.) I got up after receiving a couple of phone calls to watch the news and report to my dad who was at work at the time. I equated it to Pearl Harbor, but worse because this time it was a civilian installation. I also knew that we had gone to war.
I'm pretty unexciting. |

When JF K died I had just said good bye to my Husband he was going overseas for 9 months with the navy, and I got a telegram from my mother saying my father had just died,(we had no Phones) then with all the trauma this had brought trying to get 3 little kids organised to get to a funeral 600 miles away. I turned the TV on and the final straw was The assassination I just collapsed in my chair with the utter grief of that day.
9/11 I was in Scotland in My Mobile home where my late brother spent his summers with his wife. they had this static van as well. I walked over to say good morning we were watching the horror of the news coming in when the second plane hit the building. I just collapsed into a seat I was totally in shock, two reasons I thought it was the start of the 3rd world war. and second I was away from home and had to fly in two days to get back to Australia, wondering all the while about more horror in store for the world. And with all the security at the airports it took me 42 hours to get home.
Don't recall where I was with the Challenger and I didn't watch Dallas:)

JFK...I was 4yrs old in the front yard helping my dad
wash the Ford Country Squire station wagon, we didn't have a TV.
The neighbor lady, Mrs, McLaren did and came running across
the yard screaming "they shot the President"
Challenger....I was in the electronics section of the store, back when
we sold electronics, and saw it on a 19" Sylvania TV that, at the time,
sold for $399
9/11....I was just getting out of bed and saw in on TV, watched
the coverage all day long |

JFK was assassinated?
I was in 7th grade sitting in an upstairs classroom in a Math class when it was announced the JFK had been shot. By the time class ended and I was on my way down stairs to attend my Geography class, it was being announced that JFK was dead. I nearly fell down the stairs in shock.
side note: I had just stepped out of the living room when Lee Oswald was shot.
Challenger exploded?
I was taking a course in Architectural Drafting at a tech school when one of the students who had been listening to the radio, suddenly shouted, "It just exploded!" Being in Florida, those horrible cloud formations hung in the sky nearly the whole day as a reminder, and if you knew where to look in the morning, there were still traces of it in the air.
9/11?
I was in the same school substituting for a seventh grade class when someone announced that the towers had been hit. We watched for a while. I saw the second tower get hit and later both towers callapsing. I called my husband who told me about the Pentagon being hit and that there was still another plane unaccounted for at the time. (That one turned out the be the one the crashed in the field.)
J.R. was shot?....just kidding with that one
LOL. Actuallly, I was watching that episode. I also remember some show doing a special on how they kept that a big secret, even from the cast members. They had each cast member do a short scene where he or she actually aimed the gun and fired. The last one to aim the gun and fire was JR, himself.
Plus, at the time, my parents had traveled to Germany to be with my sister and her husband who were stationed there at the time. My sister was having her first baby, so naturally Mom and Dad wanted to be there. Why bring this up? Because, my Dad always wears a Stetson hat. While in Germany, little children would point to him and say, "Cowboy, JR!" Those were the only words Dad could understand. (He wishes he had brought a trunk load of hats. He could have sold them and paid for the whole trip.) |

I'll cover two of 'em.
Challenger Exploded?
I remember being in 6th grade and the principle of our school ushering us into the "Science Room" (which I never understand the name of, since it was basically the TV Room and nothing else), where we watched the coverage for while. I remember my teacher, who was this middle-aged nun, crying.
9/11?
I was driving to work when I first heard of it. I know exactly where I was on what road. I drive that way once in awhile now, and every time I think about it.
Anyway, the guy on the radio treated it at first more like a bizarre story. "Some plane crashed into one of the World Trade Center buildings", and he said it like it was some Cessna or small plane, and I figured some idiot got off-course.
So I got to work, and fired up my computer and tried going to CNN's website to read more, and I couldn't get there. Tried Fox....couldn't get there...MSNBC....nothing.....then I started to suspect something was wrong and that people were hammering the sites hardcore.
I went to a local radio station's website and started listening, and by then, most people knew something was wrong and we were all glued to the few computers where people got a broadcast.
I also remember some dipsh!t woman in the company trying to act like it was business as usual and trying to schedule meetings and talk about work. I had to, not so politely, tell her, "Ummm, do you realize a national emergency is going on? I don't give a #### about your meeting." |

JFK was assassinated?
I was only a little kids so no idea, I believe mum was having a tough day though
Challenger exploded?
I had just got to work and heard it on the radio in my car on the way in, I was shocked by that a lot and had a chat with my sister on the phone, she was still in Australia then.
9/11?
I arrived at work and had not heard anything as it was happening through the night here, one of my senior staff was carrying on that world war three was starting so I told them to be quiet until they could be more rational. Working for people with a disability staff have to handle thing similar to teaching staff.
I went home and watched a bit on TV to bring myself up to speed then called all staff in for a chat to tell them how our employees will be strugling with the information and the suport we needed to give them.
Oh and you forgot the single biggest event in the world
The Day Australia Won the America's Cup
I was in the North West of Western Australia and sat up all night to watch Alan Bonds Australia Two win the race after the Americans 132 year winning streak in the event.
Oh and it was my Birthday when we won it here 26 September however the record shows it happened on the 25th as thats the date it was there when it happened. |

9/11 . I was at La Garde Freinet just north of St Tropez then went to visit my Grandparents in Frejus. They were stunned by what had happened as was I. |

We may not have the same political views, but on this subject, we're brothers! Twins!
This was one of the greatest days ever for me! I remember I was on "C" level in the warehouse. I was so excited, I jumped from the crossbeam, right onto the top of my forklift (about a 6 foot drop), then jumped to the ground and ran outside cheering! I'll never forget that day!! Hats off to Australia!
I also like Australian rules football! Especially when the ref signals a goal! The whole stance and arm movement thing! Awesome! |

3 - At work, (again in central London).
4 - Dallas passed me by unnoticed |

I was only about 4 when JFK was killed, and don't really remember anything.
I was sitting on the couch watching the launch when Challenger exploded. One of those moments you just sit there in disbelief.
I turned on the TV news not long after the first plane hit the towers, when they still believed it to be an accident. You then saw the second plane hit, and you knew it was something else. My son was already up, and I woke my husband up to tell him. One of the few times in my life when I cried.
I wasn't too worried about JR, but when Mr. Burns was shot, I was very upset.......... |

How about the Oklahoma bombing?
I was watching TV at the time and without any announcements or warnings, the picture suddenly changed and I was sittng there looking at a very damaged building. At first, I thought some network had gotten their programming signals crossed. Then the picture went away and the regular programming came back on for only a minute. Suddenly, the damaged building appeared again and this time an announcer came in and explained what was happening.
And for some of you older folks, if you are reading this: Where were you when Pearl Harbor was bombed? Of course, I wasn't born yet, but shortly after 911, I spoke with many older people who compared the feelings they were having with those they had when the announcement about Pearl Harbor came.
OH, and just for fun because not too many are going to know what I am talking about. Where were you when the lights went out? (in New York). |
