Son # 1, Joe, got back from his travels yesterday. He'd been travelling in SE Asia with his Vietnamese friend. He'd stayed with Cuong's relations, whose sole purpose seemed to be getting the 2 lads as drunk as possible as quickly as possible. They were taken to a Dog Restaurant and had to eat dog, a delicacy. Then they went to Snake Village where a cobra was deliberately pissed off then killed. its blood was drained and mixed with lots of vodka and given to you as a "bloodshot" cocktail. it gets worse, then the heart was cut out still bleeding and eaten and then they had a bile cocktail, vodka and bile, totally green!!!!! Joe has a series of photos of his face during and after the imbibing of this drink....
Then though he had an amazing time. He volunteered to teach English in the jungles of Eastern Thailand and was treated like royalty. He and Cuong stayed with this Thai lady who cooked them 4 course breakfasts...the other meals were 6 and 12 courses! the children were so grateful and so polite. he has seen so much of the eworld, i can only sigh and wish I had the energy to follow in his footsteps! |

Wow, you son has some, well, um, you know.
Would it have been disrespectful to not imbibe in these "drinks"? Is this like a ritual or something?
Even if I was still drinking, there's no way I would drink a "Bile Cocktail". Not even if it was the only alcohol in the country.
He definitely has an adventurous streak. What is he planning to do for a career? |

I think if he had refused it would have been a slur on his manhood or some such and you know how hard it is for a 21 year old to back down from that sort of thing!
He has no idea what he wants to do for a career, which is slightly worrying as he is just about to start his final year of studying History at uni. Either law or business but something that allows him to travel, not fussy at all! If he wants to do law it's another 2 years which I would quite like as that would be 2 more years of coming home for the holidays, but it is very hard work, so he's got to be sure that's what he wants to do, which he's not. He is finding the whole experience quite stressful. He's so worried about making the wrong decision but I tell him it doesn't have to be a life sentence if it turns out he's taken the wrong path. |

However in certain parts of the East such as China, there is a strict way of eating a meal. It is considered rude to eat everything that you are offered, and it is the custom to leave an amount of food on your plate,It would also impolite to take the last of a dish on the table. |

| I certainly wouldn't want to stay someplace where they eat dogs. In fact, I would've burned the restraunt to the ground and told them all what evil people they are for eating such a loving, loyal animal. |

When I read your story, which was absolutely wild, it reminded me of this songwriter from Philly! Here's the song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D03nUBEE9FM
The Tanner only wishes his barks
Could just convince himself
That it just wasn't real
Sayeth The Tanner
"Operator, well, let's forget about this call
There's no one there I really wanted to talk to
Thank-you for your time
You've been so much more than kind" |

I try not to comment on "meat eating" threads, since I'm obviously biased.....
But, that's just really sick........ |
