I think that's an outdated view of China. My son said that obviously the living standards in China didn't match ours but he didn't see the sort of poverty you describe. |

I am very afraid of Paul. (Just kidding, Paul.) On second thought, I am not joking all that much.
It makes me wonder if there is life on other planets and if they have webmasters just like ours. To me it appears that running a website is a somewhat thankless task.
In my line of work, I interact with computer nerds and geeks daily. What if God turns out to be a sleazy hacker or some other type of genius who was just fooling around and tried to create a universe. What if He turns out to be extremely homely too? |
How do you know that "He" isn't actually a "She"? (Just razzing you! ) |

There is a lot of poverty in China. You just don't see it in downtown
Beijing.
So far: protests heavy handed by security; Iran's swimmer backed out because an Israeli swimmer was two lanes over; a relative of the mens volleyball coach was murdered (no I don't believe in coincidence ); internet traffic is monitored and widely curtailed; etc. etc. etc. |

I have never been to China; however, I have been to Epcot in Orlando where they have a circular theater of "Around the World" places. One of the countries featured is China.
Something I noticed during that filming was, if you looked at the scenes straight ahead or directly behind you, they were scenes of really nice areas, but if you looked to the sides, you could see down some of the streets that looked run down and impoverished. It was like seeing two completely different Chinas: one for show, the other behind the show.
Not the best way to see a country, I know. |

yep uneasy is the right word.
Can't quite put my finger on it... maybe it was when the Chinese military lifted the olympic flag... that definitely did not sit right with me.
Maybe it was the excessive display of fireworks -
And the sheer numbers of people doing involved in the opening ceremony.
They seemed more robotic than human... |

And so the violence continues
A US tourist has been stabbed to death by a Chinese man in central Beijing, officials have said. A second tourist was badly hurt in the attack at the Drum Tower monument. The pair are relatives of a US Olympic volleyball team coach.
The assailant then committed suicide by jumping from the 13th Century landmark, officials say. The motive is not known. The attack happened despite high security across the capital on the first full day of Olympic competition, with more than 150,000 police and other personnel on patrol.
Officials named the Chinese man as 47-year-old Tang Yongming, from the eastern town of Hangzhou, but said they had no idea what had motivated his attack or suicide.
"While at the Drum Tower in central Beijing, the two family members were stabbed during an attack by what local law enforcement authorities have indicated was a lone assailant," the International Olympic Committee said in a statement.
Reports say the tourists' guide was also hurt

Who knows? But it must be upsetting both for Russian and Georgian athletes. Yesterday, in the news, they were congratulating and hugging each others after a competition. |

They reported on the Today Show that the stabbings were a random act of violence. Don't believe that for a second. If it were just a random act then this person would be attacking the rest of the people milling around there, some of them most probably his own countrymen and women. This was a deliberate hate crime. I feel so bad for that lady. She lost her husband and will never forget this for the rest of her life. To go over there with hope and good will and suffer such a loss of a loved one and probably the ability to give people the benefit of the doubt. A terrible loss. |

Say hey, Jena Fuller! This may be just a coincidence, but I'm very accustomed to the sixth world. I didn't find the 5th world very agreeable at all and those folks in the 4th world, they're all bad eggs!
P.S., I just got an SSP Smash Up Derby for free this weekend!! And a Charlie Chaplin VHS and Fritz Lang's Metropolis for free. All I had to do was move a bunch of boxes stuffed with "historic bricks". Kinda neat, huh? |

It reminds me of the horrific bombing attack at the Atlanta Olympics.
Terrorism IS the final resort of the disenfranchised and powerless- when the system doesn't work for them.
I'm concerned about more to come.
...............
I thought it a bit odd that they portrayed the different ethnic groups from around China- but later you learned that the children were actually from schools around Beijing.
Considering that most of the people in that area are the dominant Han Chinese, probably not one of them was actually the ethnicity represented by the regalia they were wearing.
Rather reminds me of things I often see in the US... both countries talk a good talk, but the reality is far different than what is said (and the Chinese DO have a bad rep for their treatment of minorities!)
In other words- just as I expected- a good propaganda show (although I admit it was spectacular! We watched it yesterday afternoon.) |

| I need to add- the bombing in Atlanta wasn't a disenfranchised person- he was someone who supported forcing a narrow ideology on the rest of the country. |

Let us not forget the news stories:
....they cumputer generated enhanced the opening fireworks display for broadcast to the stadium and to foreign television
....they had a 7yr old LIP SYNC the opening song instead of the girl who acutally sang it because that girl "wasn't cute enough" and had to represent the country.
...there are two China's and you don't have to go far to see them; if your security/guide is lax. |

BEIJING -- The Chinese gymnasts could have picked out their leotards from Thumbelina's closet as they performed gymnastics in miniature on Wednesday. Wearing blue eye shadow with their hair pulled back, He Kexin, Jiang Yuyuan and Yang Yilin looked like girls who had just rummaged through their mothers' makeup. This was a ladies' final, though somehow it was hard to see how they qualified as women.
Amid pre-Olympic hand-wringing over why the birthdates of He, Yang and Jiang didn't jibe with other registration materials that showed they might be as young as 14, China swore on its stars' passport stamps that the tots are the legal tumbling age of 16. But while the tiny trio helped their nation whisk the gold medal away from a suddenly clumsy U.S. group in the team competition, it was impossible to deny the visual evidence of something unjust in China. |
