I couldn't wait until the weekend, so I got a buddy of mine to run me down to south Jersey today. Total surprise, think she looks happy?
I just got back about an hour ago, and TG, since it just started T&L, with buckets of rain. I know the garage is a mess, but I had to send the pics anyway. The garage used to be be the one place in this house that was all mine, but I guess no more!
What a sweet little ride,and the story behind the selling of the bike, not something you hear everyday.
The reason this guy had the bike up is that he's a Harley guy, and this was his wifes. She prefers the back of his Harley, but they have a 17 year old with Downs. The kid won't ride on the back of a bike, but they found out that he loves to be in a sidecar. So the guy sold this bike to put a deposit down on a Goldwing with a sidecar so that he and his wife can ride with their son in the sidecar. Isn't that great? Makes me feel good knowing that my money for this went to make this young man happy, and my daughter got exactly what she wanted too.
Sometimes circumstances just make you feel great.
So everyone wins in this situation!

Way to go Steve, and that's a nice little bike!!!!
Every one is happy all around and that's good and the family can get thier son the side car...that is great and God work's in wondrous ways to make good things happen...and btw...I like her shirt!!!!!

That's a nice looking bike! I wish I had one like it for my daily commute!!!
(If it's like the Honda 175 I had years ago- I got over 80mpg!) |

Having never owned a motor cycle before, may I ask? What precautions do you take to secure your bike when it is parked somewhere? I mean, how do you prevent bike theft?
With the number of cars than get broken into and stolen, I would think stealing a bike would be a snap for the pros.
Just curious.  |

I had my new Triumph fitted with an alarm system at the dealership. It cost me $400.00 more, but also reduced my insurance costs. I'm also thinking of having it fitted with a tracking system, so if it ever did go missing, the cops could find it fairly easy. My bike is the one I'll be using to commute on, so there was a need for the alarm system.
As for the little Honda, until it's used on a daily basis, and not just ridden for fun, I won't have it fitted with an alarm.
I keep them locked in the garage at night, so I don't worry too much. |

The gas milage was the big selling point on both the bikes I own. My Bonneville is a 865, holds about 4 gallons, and gets maybe 70 MPG. The little Rebel is only a 250, holds about 2 gallons, and gets approximately 78-80 MPG.
My old mercedes gets about 19MPG, and only runs on high test, so it was pretty much a no-brainer when it came to the motorcycles. Now I only run the car if I have to take more than one of the kids out, for groceries, etc. And I'm saving a ton of money on gas.
With just the car, I was spending around $200.00 a month on gas. Now, I haven't been to a gas station since the beginning of the month. |

That sounds like a good move then that you have the motor bikes to use when you don't need the car and your saving money.
That's $200 extra a month you can use for groceries or what ever then.

Nice bike!!! I thought about getting one when I made the decision to get a bike, but opted for the 750cc instead. It still gets around 65mpg!! The Rebel should get around 80mpg.
As for security, mine has a "fork lock" on it. You turn the front wheel all the way to the left and turn the key in the front lock (which is actually built in to the upper part of the front fork). It locks the front wheel in that position so no one can straighten it out to move it anywhere. Plus, mine weighs almost 600 lbs. It's not impossible to steal, but would be very difficult.
You can also buy a brake lock that fits around the front brake. Once that hits the top of the fork, the wheel won't turn. That one is around $50 I believe--cheaper than an alarm system. The alarm systems are good too, just like on a car. It all depends on how much $$$ you want to spend.
I think the "crotch rockets" are the ones that get stolen the most, though. They're very lightweight (made of mostly plastic). Harleys would be next in line (probably) followed by the custom ones. |
