After a awful 2 years with my husband becomming ill ,my best friend dying within 24 hours , having to move house , a friend in trouble with the police, fights and arquements between family and friends I finaly reached my breaking point and got a panic attack yesterday.
No one noticed and I got through it ,but knowing this one will be the first in a long row I need your advice in to what the best way is to go about it.
I DONT want any medication from doctors since that only makes me worse and dependend on that stuff, but beside's my Valerian root is there anything else to fight it ?
I KNOW I'm not the only one and I also know there are far worse things to deal with in life but i dont see any options right now . |

Here, Pippa. I've come close to having one a few years ago. Not a full blown one,but scary enough. I mostly go through bouts of depression and being silly is what snaps me out of it. I'm so sorry for what you've been going through . This site I've briefly looked at is about a gentleman who believes in home remedies for panic attacks. I hope this helps to ease your mind. My prayers are with you. Much hugs and kisses to you. |

Pippa,
I feel very sympathetic to your plight. I, too, have been having panic attacks that I believe are a culmination of overwhelming events in my life and that middle age nebula we refer to as menopause.
I won't get into the various symptoms, but on advice from a neighbour I started to take 3 supplements that have drastically contributed to my mental, emotional and physical well being.
I buy them in bulk at Cosco (Club Price) for about $40.
1. Wild Salmon and Fish Oil blend
2. Cod liver oil
3. Oil of Evening Primrose.
Even the joint pain in my knuckles, knees, and shoulder have all dissapated. I haven't woken up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat feeling like I can't move and there's a heavy weight on my chance.
And I'm far less exhausted. Although, lights out for me about 9:30. Since I wake up around 5:30 - that gives me a good solid 8 hours.
It took about 2 weeks for me to start seeing results.
Hope that helps.

I heard a lot of great results with tai chi.
Have to see if and where I can start with some of that.
Would do the old bones some good that's for sure ! |

Pippa,
I have never had a full-blown panic attack; however, I used to have really bad dreams to the point that I would wake up with all of my muscles locked up and I my heart would be pounding.
I learned some Zen meditation techniques that have helped me tremendously through any form of anxiety, worry, or tension of any kind. I have the book, "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," by Shunryu Suyuki.
In the book, there is a simple techique of concentrating on your breathing. Quietly inhale, thinking of nothing but the inhaling and then concentrate as your exhale. Do this several times and you may find yourself relaxing. I know that I did. I even got to the point where, if I were having a bad dream, I could actually wake myself up, breathe in and out, and tell myself that I was safe in my own bed. Almost immediately, my anxiety would leave and I could go back to sleep without the dream reaccurring.
Like you, I try to avoid medications and look for alternatives for handling
problems. Hope this helps. |

And have you tried listening to your favorite music (preferably through earphones or headphones) with no other distractions? Just focus on the music. |

Meditation absolutely will work. When I was in my later teens, I suffered from terrible attacks of anxiety, and I can tell you that meditation 100% works.
Having said that, Pippa, I am sad to hear that you are having such a tough time. Just remember that life is a roll coaster of good and bad, and that it is having a little bad that makes us appreciate the good when it comes.... and it will. Keep smiling and be happy, because it is only a state of mind. Also, find a moment to do something that brings joy to you everyday; there are 24 hours, so there is ample time to find the time. It can be as simple as going for a walk and enjoying the stars above. |
