| We have a big oak tree where bats like to get. We have never had a problem with them though. We just leave them alone. One benefit to having them here in Florida is they do eat tons of bugs. |

Ah, bats are cute! I love the little guys. And they are an important part of the eco-system, eating millions of disease carrying mosquitos.
I have wanted to put a bat house up somewhere in our yard, but we really don't have the right exposure. If I can find a place to put it, I'm still looking at putting up a bat house. |

I've thought of hanging one from our live oak tree somewhere. They're easy and cheap to build and I would welcome the bats (plans are supposed to be available on the internet). They're neat creatures and fun to watch in the evening.
I also understand we can get "baits" that immunize bats against rabies... saw something on TV about them one time. Something used by one of the universities to protect the bats they had on their land. |

I like throwing rocks out in front of bats. Their radar
kicks in and they dive for it.....every time...
Conversely, I never throw baseballs at bats

That's interesting about the baits, I hadn't heard of that. Certainly something work looking into.
The oak tree sounds like a good idea. I was told they need an Eastern exposure with plenty of sun. The only possible place we have would be right up against the house, and that could be a bit messy........ |

Not really...I have one solitary bat that roosts above my front door...
I just have to sweep the moth wings and poops every two days....
she isn't as messy as the swallows were... |

Bat poop puts out amonia. Which is deadly to breath in for most of us.
I've heard of the rabies baits - but when I heard about it it was made for racoons and other critters. They put it into caramel cubes and dropped it from airplanes into the forest. |

We have bats around here all the time. If you listen closely enough you can actually hear them. That is, if your hearing is still intact. The older you get the more you lose of the higher frequencies. Hubby doesn't hear them any more. I never heard of the bat traps though. And the ammonia from anyone's or anything's waste has to be pretty concentrated before it's dangerous. About a year ago a health inspector went to visit some lonely old cat lady near our area. Turned out she had something like 40 cats in her house that were allowed to run free and poop and mate and whatever as much and wherever they wanted. The inspector wasn't in there very long when she got so sick she had to go to the hospital and had permanent damage done to her lungs because of the stink.

T'Lor is right..it takes quite a bit of "build up" before bat poop becomes toxic...I'd have to wait years. It's great fertilizer though. Just to set the record straight...bats do not carry anymore, or more frequent cases, of rabies than your local squirrel, rat, fox, possom, or raccoon...most of the ones tested are found sick on the ground, which is a symptom of the disease in bats. If they're flying and not coming after you...they are probably healthy and don't assume because a bat is solitary that it has been rejected by the roost because it is sick...there are many strains of solitary bat hunters. I love bats...this World would be overcome with bugs coming after you without them...and they're REALLY cute...you should see how they imprint on a human after many years of sensing you. T'Lor, mine does a verbal sqeek greeting...she's a tiny little brown bat with big ears. |

I like to do a high-pitched whistle around bats. They start swooping down at me like maniacs!
Bats dig trees. |

It's also possible that the European bat population is more contaged than the US population. Especially on the continent more than in the more isolated environment here in Scandinavia.

Well now you're just assuming that it was a fruit bat. N |
