Living in Quebec, there are no shortages of stupid laws...
For instance:
Legal yellow margarine is coming to Quebec.
KEVIN DOUGHERTY, The Gazette
Don't reach for your glasses, that margarine is yellow
Quebec cabinet approves change. Vegetable oil industry welcomes news that long-standing roadblock is coming down
Psst! Spread the word.
Legal yellow margarine is coming to Quebec.
The cabinet appears to have sounded the death knell for the off-white margarine distinctive to Quebec, the last province to rule that margarine can be any colour as long as it is not yellow.
Marcel Groleau, head of the Fédération des producteurs de lait du Québec, representing milk producers, says a cabinet decree quietly adopted on June 25 would end the ban on margarine that might be mistaken for butter.
Invoking cabinet secrecy, the government still won't confirm the news, but Frédéric Lagacé, spokesperson for Agriculture Minister Laurent Lessard, hinted it will be made official next Wednesday when the provincial leaders' Council of the Federation meets in Quebec City.
Quebec's 14,000 milk producers seem to have run up the yellow - er, white - flag anyway, accepting the notion that margarine made from vegetable oils and butter made from milk can coexist on grocery shelves.
"It's over," admitted federation spokesperson Jean Vigneault. "The margarine producers can toast their victory with a glass of Canada Dry."
Vigneault said the goal of margarine makers is to make a "perfect copy" of butter, and dairy producers consider the yellow colour "part of the trademark."
But he also said that the trend in Quebec and other provinces shows a slight decline in margarine consumption and a slight increase in butter sales.
Ten years ago, when then-premier Lucien Bouchard proposed lifting the colour ban, " 'cholesterolphobia' was very high," Vigneault added. Margarine was touted as a healthy alternative to butter.
The dairy producers are preparing for renegotiation of Canada's internal trade agreements, which are being discussed in Quebec City this week at a federal-provincial meeting of agriculture ministers.
While they would have liked to see the province use the colour ban as a bargaining chip, they have moved on.
"We have to choose our battles," Vigneault said.
Three years ago, Quebec agriculture inspectors swooped down on four Quebec City-area Wal-Mart stores to seize 72 plastic tubs of yellow margarine inadvertently shipped to the province.
Quebec's regulation on oleo specifies that margarine "must not be a colour more than one degree and six tenths nor less than 10 degrees and five tenths yellow or yellow and red combined, measured on the Lovibond colour scale."
Sean McPhee, executive director of VOIC - the Vegetable Oil Industry of Canada, representing 75,000 oil-seed producers, processors and makers of margarine, cooking oil, salad dressing, mayonnaise and dessert toppings - welcomed the news Quebec will no longer tell the industry what colour margarine can be.
"You can bet it will be yellow," McPhee said.

Get a load of ours! These are the most dumb laws I've ever seen! Of course most of these were made during early statehood.
One may not promote a “horse tripping event”. (this must be because cow tipping was so boring)
It is illegal for the owner of a bar to allow anyone inside to pretend to have sex with a buffalo. ( But it's not as bad as having sex with a prostitute outside of a bar!)
Females are forbidden from doing their own hair without being licensed by the state. ( I could have been arrested a thousand times over for this one. They'd be doing me a favor because my style is crap anyways!)
Dogs must have a permit signed by the mayor in order to congregate in groups of three or more on private property.( Next time there's a three way butt sniffing meeting going on the mayor needs to be signing that permit!)
Oklahoma will not tolerate anyone taking a bite out of another’s hamburger.( You touch my cheeseburger you die!)
It is against the law to read a comic book while operating a motor vehicle.
( Ain't funny when you crash into a car ahead of you! D'uh!)
Whaling is illegal.
(We DON'T have whales in Oklahoma!)
It is illegal to have the hind legs of farm animals in your boots.
(Probably because it's sexual and they'll wear out the boots too. Baaaa!)
Residents are taxed for the furniture in their homes, and any other personal belongings.
(Democrats made up that one I bet!)
People who make “ugly faces” at dogs may be fined and/or jailed.
( Next pitbull I see I'm going to make kissy faces at!)
Cars must be tethered outside of public buildings.
( That way my mother the car can't stray too far looking for that next lube job.)
No one may spit on a sidewalk.( anyone who does this should be strung by their toes, anyways! Gross!)
It is illegal to wear your boots to bed.(And why pray tell? Because cheap satin wrinkles easily in those bordellos that's why!)
It is illegal to have sex before you are married. (85 % of Oklahoma must now go to jail!)
Fish may not be contained in fishbowls while on a public bus. ( You hear that Gilbert? No bus rides for you!)
Tissues are not to be found in the back of one’s car. ( But I love left over snot! It makes a great road trip snack!) |

Dodging bullets while on the run must need boots. I kinda wondered if the cowboy spurs had something to do with all that sheet ripping. IMO this law must be repealed. A few measley sheets just ain't worth a bullet in the butt! |

OK, my comments in bold. But I bet there was good and valid reason behind some of these laws...
Legislating against stupidity is a never ending job for some lawyers.
Get a load of ours! These are the most dumb laws I've ever seen! Of course most of these were made during early statehood.
One may not promote a “horse tripping event”. (this must be because cow tipping was so boring)
However, recently a friend of my daughter's boyfriend was telling a story about a camel tipping incident that occurred during a recent trip to the middle east....
It is illegal for the owner of a bar to allow anyone inside to pretend to have sex with a buffalo. ( But it's not as bad as having sex with a prostitute outside of a bar!)
Simulating beastiality should be under the animal protection laws.
Females are forbidden from doing their own hair without being licensed by the state. ( I could have been arrested a thousand times over for this one. They'd be doing me a favor because my style is crap anyways!)
OK. this is stupid but two words: Amy Winehouse...
Dogs must have a permit signed by the mayor in order to congregate in groups of three or more on private property.( Next time there's a three way butt sniffing meeting going on the mayor needs to be signing that permit!)
"Mr. Mayor, Fido is here for his 3'oclock appointment to have his documents signed....
Oklahoma will not tolerate anyone taking a bite out of another’s hamburger.( You touch my cheeseburger you die!)
You mean there's a market for MacDonald's and Wendy's tosell "bite-size" burgers.?
It is against the law to read a comic book while operating a motor vehicle.
( Ain't funny when you crash into a car ahead of you! D'uh!)
Whaling is illegal.
(We DON'T have whales in Oklahoma!)
OK, this could be legit if whaling also incorporates the sale or marketing of whale products.
It is illegal to have the hind legs of farm animals in your boots.
(Probably because it's sexual and they'll wear out the boots too. Baaaa!)
Residents are taxed for the furniture in their homes, and any other personal belongings.
(Democrats made up that one I bet!)
"This one requires it's own thread"
People who make “ugly faces” at dogs may be fined and/or jailed.
( Next pitbull I see I'm going to make kissy faces at!)
Again, animal protection laws. Provoking animals is never a good thing.
Cars must be tethered outside of public buildings.
( That way my mother the car can't stray too far looking for that next lube job.)
I think that may be a throwback from horse-drawn carriages to horseless carriages...
No one may spit on a sidewalk.( anyone who does this should be strung by their toes, anyways! Gross!)
Could be a good law during times of plague or TB outbreaks...
It is illegal to wear your boots to bed.(And why pray tell? Because cheap satin wrinkles easily in those bordellos that's why!)
(especially if you have spurs and you sleep in a waterbed... insurance coverage, yada yada yada)
It is illegal to have sex before you are married. (85 % of Oklahoma must now go to jail!)
I thought 85% of Oklahoma was in jail (Debb ducks)
Fish may not be contained in fishbowls while on a public bus. ( You hear that Gilbert? No bus rides for you!)
Glass... another insurance clause.
Tissues are not to be found in the back of one’s car. ( But I love left over snot! It makes a great road trip snack!)[/quote]
are you sure it said Tissues and not Issues...? |

Does Amy Winehouse have any kids? Wouldn't it be cool to watch her baby develop inside the womb?
Oklahoma has some fun laws. Quebec has some goodies and pretty soon, you'll see "Prix de Beaute" in all these theaters in Montreal and Quebby City! I saw a marquee in Pointe-Claire and it said, "Coming Soon! Prix de Beaute Advance tickets on sale now!"
So, if you're near Pointe-Claire, you'll finally get to see Prix de Beaute. |

You know... think of that law and the following:
Two feet found on B.C. coast from same person
The Canadian Press
July 10, 2008 at 2:06 PM EDT
DELTA, B.C. — Investigators say two of the five feet that have washed up on the shores of British Columbia belonged to the same person, but the identify of that person — and all the others — remains a mystery.
Police say they're reviewing all missing persons files, including 243 men and 159 women, and have eliminated 130 missing men so far.
They say there is no evidence of wrongdoing and it appears they naturally separated from bodies, although police say they aren't ruling out any possibilities.
“There is no evidence that these feet have been severed. There were no tool marks and no visible signs of trauma,” Constable Annie Linteau told reporters.
“It appears that these feet have naturally disarticulated from the body.”
The first right foot was found Aug. 20 on Jedidiah Island in the Strait of Georgia. On Aug. 26, another right foot was found inside a man's size 12 Reebok sneaker on nearby Gabriola Island.
A third was found in the same area, on the east side of Valdez Island, on Feb. 8.
The fourth foot, the only one belonging to a woman, was found May 22 on Kirkland Island in the Fraser River, only a kilometre away from the site in Ladner where the fifth foot, a size 10 left foot, was found on June 16.
A sixth find last month turned out to be a hoax, with an animal paw stuffed inside a shoe, but that didn't deter public interest in the case, which is the subject of wild speculation and conspiracy theories.
Constable Linteau said police aren't ruling anything out but they have no reason to believe the incidents are related in any way.
“Until all of those remains have been identified we are going to explore all possibilities,” Constable Linteau said.
Investigators, who include RCMP and Delta police officers and the coroner's office, released details of the size, brand and production date of each shoe.
Investigators have reviewed all missing persons cases in B.C. and some in Alberta in an effort to identify the victims but Dean Hilderbrand, a forensic scientist working on the case, said DNA alone provides limited information.
The testing confirms the sex but not the race or the date of death.
“These were obviously very challenging samples. Being in water is the worst-case scenario,” Mr. Hilderbrand said.
He said the DNA samples are yielding useful information but “the DNA doesn't give any information about how long these samples have been in the water.” |

Hokey Smokes, Debb! That's positively creepy! It sounds like a Kathy Reichs novel! Where are all these people coming from? They must be kidnapped, murdered, and thrown into the waters. And the animal paw is really weird. Kinda makes me think a kid must have pulled that prank. 5 people? Did a plane go down in that vicinity or a ship capsize? |
