So, dig this..... our police chief (my boss  ) has called for a fireworks sale ban. Not sure how far he wishes to extend the ban....but..... It's due to a slight "incident" on the 4th.
We had 9 buildings of an apartment complex burn to the ground!!!!! All because some idiots were shooting off the fireworks INSIDE ONE OF THE BUILDINGS!!!!!!! Yes, you read that right INSIDE!!!!!
The complex is older, walls paper thin. I guess they went up like tinder boxes. Craziness!!!! Now about 200 people are homeless. Most of them are not exactly model citizens, but that's still sad. They lost everything. I can't even imagine that. And there are very few that had renters' insurance.
Here's my proposal..... When you sign the lease for an apt, there should be a clause in there that says if you shoot off fireworks in the complex (inside or outside--doesn't matter), you get automatically evicted. You should also be required to have renters' insurance. It's less than $20 a month!!! I know that's a lot to some people, but if my bank can require me to have homeowners' insurance, why shouldn't it be the same in an apartment????
We already have apt complexes here that have a clause that says if you get caught with any drug activity in your apt (using, dealing, etc) you're automatically evicted. Therefore, a fireworks clause shouldn't be a problem. And the insurance thing??? Like I said, I'm required by the mortgage lender to have it for my house, so......
And as for banning the sale of fireworks???? Dream on boss!!!! Most people I know go over the state line into Michigan and bring them right back to Ohio as it is. You'll never stop them. We get waaaaaaaaayyyyyy too many complaints about them to even try to enforce the law that's already on the books as it is. Stiffer fines/penalties are nothing but a joke..... Ain't gonna happen..... |

They are banned here but mainly due to the risk of bush fires, only a licenced operator can conduct a fireworks display. The only exception is the Australian Capitol Territory (Canberra) where you can still buy fireworks.
It would be great fun to have a go at a few fireworks, I remember as a kid in the UK watching them being fired from milk bottles in the back garden.
You would have to be a Darwin Award candidate to fire them indoors. |
