Here's the problem... there is no way to differentiate between the sane with pistols and the idiots with pistols.

It struck me as funny that firstly anyone would even consider taking a gun to a movie in the first place and even more interesting that there was a need to ask people not to.
This is the cultural difference I am talking about, the way guns are so much a part of daily living. Its slightly disturbing for an outsider when your just not used to this.
I remember asking on an aussie forum about driving in the US and any tips people could give, like driving around round abouts in the opposite direction and one poster commented, don't get into an argument, they carry guns over there. Again not something I would have considered an issue (and I don' believe it is).
Is it something people living in the US even notice or is it so common it goes largely un-noticed.
Mind you with all those unseen guns around you would have to be an idiot to do anything wrong wouldn't you. |

I am not worried about being shot while driving, even if I get into an argument.
I don't get into an argument b/c I don't want someone to try to beat me up with their repressed road rage.
Now, you would think all of those unseen guns would stop people from doing anything wrong. You may have noticed the shootings that occur on academic grounds are the ones that always make the papers. Did you know that on academic grounds you are pretty nearly always forbidden to carry, even if you have a license to do so? That means all of those shootings occurred illegally. I'll let you ponder that for a second...
A gun is an inanimate object. We are not afraid of inanimate objects. We're afraid of the damage certain idiots may cause who might get a hold of them, and that's why we have certain gun restrictions.
Many of us hunt too, it's much more humane to do it with a gun.
And, as Cat pointed out. We do not believe that we are immune to attack either from within or without. As the attackers will almost certainly be carrying guns (not counting A-bombs and biologicals) it makes sense to have those and not...say...bows and arrows.
For those that do have other weapons, a gun is the easiest to become proficient with in the shortest amount of time and will stop the perp better than anything else that we have readily available.
It's just good sense at that point. |

This is why I like to be armed and dangerous.
