I am starting a different thread because I didn't want to hyjack Morgram's thread: http://www.williamshatner.com/index.php ... 241#468241
Morgram asked what Bill was doing these days?
I replied:
| Quote: | If I may be so bold, perhaps it is time to stop expecting Bill to keep us entertained without giving something back. How about for a change, we pool our efforts into helping him make his dream come true of helping children through the HCHS and other charities? At last count, there were a little less than 5000 members here. I figured it out one time that if each of us donated 1.07 a year, we could sponsor a horse for the Ahead with Horses project.
I am sure that with Paul's help, we could create a special fund, just for that. And yes, I know about the regular donation box for the HCHS, but this would be special for sponsoring a horse by the members of this message board.
How about it? |
To which Suzie replied:

So, Paul? If you are lurking about. How about it? Do you think we could start a special fund to raise enough money to sponsor a horse for the Ahead with Horses? If I remember correctly from the paper at the HCHS this past summer, it costs 5000.00 to sponsor a horse for a year. Do we really have nearly 5000 members here? I know that many do not post; however, many do lurk. But, just think about it. I think that everyone could come up with a dollar or two. With this many members, we would all be contributing to something really worthwhile and we would be making a bold statement from the depths of the BBS basement.
And, as I posted above, I realize that there is already a button for the HCHS contributions, but I was wondering if we could have a special one just for the BBS Sponsor a Horse Fund.
Ok, I am playing the part of the nail-head right now, so if you are going to hammer it, please be gentle. |

I like the idea, too - count me in. It would only be a small donation for each one, but the effect hopefully would be much bigger.
Paypal for us aliens from faraway planets is a good idea imo. |

I have Paypal also. Sounds like a good way to go with this.
Time will tell if we have enough interest in the project and whether or not Paul and the powers-that-be will approve of it.
Let's here for

I don't know how many actual members there are here. Many people make a profile to post something and we never hear from them again - others are people that still have a username but have drifted away from the community - other's are banned but there are still quite a few people that look.
If you want to spearhead this - it's pretty easy. My suggestion would be instead of the $1.07 would be to donate one dollar.
How?
Easy enough - it's already set up.
Haven't you scrolled down the left navigator to see the donation area? Look for If you were to click it it would take you to a special store page:
http://store.yahoo.net/shatner-store/holcharhorsh.html
The item is $1.00 and you can purchase the quantity of dollar donations you want for the HCHS.
For Paypal the Horseshow.org site front page has a Paypal donations button that you can press do the same thing as the store - buy a $1.00 donation. I can't really put the button here because of the coding but it's still safe to use that button - it goes directly to the Paypal site where you can sign in and donate $1.00
I would have people put in the comment field on the store and on Paypal that this is the WilliamShatner.com Board "Fan Power" Fundraiser to Sponsor a Horse - or come up with a fancy name that will tell us that the donation is towards a supporting a horse.
Is that simple enough?

OK, I just thought the HCHS button was for general donations. I will definitely check it out then, as I am sure others interested will too. |

There you have it folks! Do you think if we use the above statement as Paul suggested, we could pull this off? |

Actually Paul, the icon takes us directly HCHS advertisement and there is a link to Paypal; however, the link you gave us: http://shatner-store.stores.yahoo.net/holcharhorsh.html does take us to the store. I think this is where some of the confusion has been.
At any rate. I guess it would'nt hurt to try. |

Please excuse my ignorance Paul, but I cannot find the "buy a donation" place. I have been to the store and my old eyes just are not seeing it. I see merchandise to buy, which I really do not need. I just want to, as you say purchase a donation. If I simply click on the PayPal button, it takes me to the place to donate, but there is no place to specify what it is for. It is as if it were just a general donation.
I know, I am probably overlooking something or am just plain stupid. At any rate, being a holiday weekend, I will wait and see what others think of this project. I have already raised some on my own to put towards it. |

I went in and cleaned up the text on the page and worked on the PayPal button just after I posted but I turned off the Order button accidentally. You can use the same page now to get to the PayPal donation page or use a CC in the store to make a donation. |

I think that's a great idea. Due to work and family and distance I couldn't be there, so, I sent a donation instead. I will do that every year.
Here's something, not sure if it has been broached before - but what about a CD of photographs - about I don't know maybe 20 or something then sell them for (How much does it cost to produce a CD??Does anyone know?) $10. And the revenue goes to the HCHS. Do they do that already?
In order for a charity to make money people need to know about it. Posters, postcards, e-cards anything which shows what the children can do riding on those horses..
There are lots of different ways to raise money for charity. Maybe we could pool some ideas..
Sorry I have a tendancy to get a bit emotional about things that matter.
