Hit comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral has been named best British movie in an internet poll. The 1994 film narrowly vanquished Monty Python's Life of Brian in the survey of 1,000 adults conducted by Virgin Media.

Sir Anthony Hopkins shared the title of Britain's favourite actor with Sir Sean Connery, while Sir Michael Caine took third place.

Dame Judi Dench was named the country's favourite actress, ahead of Dame Helen Mirren and Julie Walters. Trainspotting, the latest James Bond film Casino Royale and crime comedy Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels are among the other movies included.

Errr....NO! Shocked

There are sooooo many better ones!

Whiskey Galore!
Italian Job!

at least a dozen Carry On films (Esp. ones with ding dong Leslie Phillips! Laughing )

Olivier's Richard III

Get Carter

Dad's Army (Yes I know it's a spin off from the series but has oodles more wit and charm then Hugh Grant!!!!)

Hedd Wyn (Welsh language film)

.....among many others which I feel to be superior to 4 weddings!

Cool

I kept this quiet for so many reasons. Anyway, since this is about Four Weddings, I will tell you that my first cousin was Charlotte Coleman (Scarlet with the red hair). She got her second BAFTA nomination for that. Sadly, my dear cousin passed away in 2001.

She was famous for several roles. In particular, she was Marmalade Atkins, Sue in Wurzel Gummidge and Bess in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, which got her her first BAFTA nomination. We were all very proud of her in my family. The last time I met her, I was visiting England, and we went to see the movie, Jackie Brown.

britstarfan,

This may come as shock to you, but most of us don't know anything about British history or culture. You are barking up the wrong tree.

Yours truly, -- CT

(I do know that famous entertainers such as Tom Jones and Richard Burton are Welshman.)

What a load of bollocks. (That's an Anglo-saxon word, a little cultural lesson for you). You've never heard of William Shakespeare, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Alfred Hitchcock, Cary Grant or countless others, or any of the films Everton mentioned. Also, when was this site designated "American culture only"?

I liked Four Weddings And A Funeral very much. I like Hugh Grant's portrayal of a hesitant gentleman who can't seem to get the timing right in wooing his lady love. I didn't really care for the American female protagonist because she seemed so fickle and couldn't make up her mind what she wanted when what she wanted was right there before her eyes. And the death of their friend during the wedding was tragic. I think that Angela's Ashe's isn't from Great Britain, but I'd have to say that beats Four Weddings And A Funeral as far as storyline, though, even if it may not be on the list. I haven't taken time yet to look at it.
And this site is most definitely international Smile Smile Ct can visit the international cafe' and have a nice cup of Earl Grey or a cup of java. Either way it's a nice spot to while the way. Smile Smile Cool
Harry, I'm so very sorry for the passing of your cousin. Truly am very sorry. I enjoyed her part as Scarlett very much and she was a talented actress. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

May I also add Terry Nutkins, Fred Dibnah and Les Dennis to that list of legends? Confused

I seem to remember when i did a poll, ( quite a long while ago), on the best British comedy, these familiar faces were mentioned, by quite a lot of people who are not from the U.K.

So i don't think the British movie/TV series culture are that much of a mystery to people outside the U.K.
