In Nineteen Forty Three...Disguised as a Nun, Frederick Kimmel finally makes it to the Vatican to have his Ordination verified...after this picture was taken he took on the Role and Dress of a Friar of Good Hope...

  *gasp!* Sue Marie, was that you?!? I can't tell if that's a Roman Catholic nun or an Episcopalian nun since I've never met the latter before! No disrespect intended with the captioning, of course, M'am! |

No disrespect taken I meant for folks to have fun with it. And yes, that is Sister Susan Marie of the Community of the Transfiguration in Glendale, Ohio (Episcopal). AKA, you guessed it: SMB, Sue B. I was a lot skinnier then too.  It was a great experience and made a big impact on how I live my life today; although obviously, it turned out not to be my life's calling, but hey!, it kept me out of trouble in the seventies.
Trouble seemed to find me in the eighties though, but then I met Bob and the rest is history.... (We had four priests at our wedding.... we don't dare screw it up.... there would be hell to pay....  )
The door is the entrance to Bok Tower in Lake Wales, Florida. I learned to play the carillon while at the convent in Ohio. While there, we hosted the International Guild of Carillonneurs. I met Mr. Myers there who invited me to visit Bok Tower when I went home on furlow one year. He even let me play a few tunes (after the park closed). I think I made our church organist jealous because Mr. Myers was very protective of the bells and didn't let just anyone play.
I used to get that question from children who watched, "The Flying Nun" on TV: "Sister, can you fly?" I would just smile and say, "No, not today, I have the wrong head gear on." |

I didn't know that the Episcopalians had nuns! Is it the same as with the Catholics where you become a novice, etc.? I learn something everytime I log in here. |

Hi, Don't feel bad. The average Episcopalian doesn't know about the religious orders either. Yes, there are stages to becoming a fully vowed nun (I was only a novice for three years and never took my vows). The Episcopal Church doesn't have nearly as many religious orders as the RCs; however, they have many of the same orders: Franciscan, Benedictine. St Mary's just to name a few. While I was there, we hosted a conference for Anglican religious orders and had representatives from just about every Order from around the country and some from England. There were the very traditional nuns like from St. Mary's in Peekskill to some very modern nuns who wore modified habits. Of course, this was over 30 years ago and I am sure things have changed a lot since I knew any of these women. Here is a list of some of them:

Did you know that the famous Graymoore Friary actually has Episcopal roots? http://www.atonementfriars.org/history.htm That is why Graymoore is dedicated to Christian Unity and interreligious dialogue.
Before going to the convent in Ohio I visited some other convents. I visited the Poor Clares in Long Island, NY and the Order of St. Helena in Vails Gate, New York. While visiting them, I got to attend some Folk Masses at Graymoore. Those were great fun. I guess you could say that I was a religious hippy of sorts with the colorful clothes, but instead of being high of drugs, I was high on God.

| Whew! Glad to hear we didn't offend! From what you've told me the Episcopalian Church and the Catholic Church still have close ties with eachother and that was confirmed last Sunday when my priest said he was going to a friend's ordination and the friend's Episcopalian. It used to be that the Catholic Church was so rigid, especially during the 1800's that it wouldn't allow for any visitation of other churches, mixed faith marriages, etc. Vatican II sure changed that, but there's always still a few things that need improving....and being a traditionalist, I think that some things are fine the way they are. Got to pick and choose your battles. |
