I thought John Hurt was wonderful as the decrepit and possessed Ox.

Oxley is an obvious and heavily-used deus ex machina.

Driven insane (possessed) by a telepathic telegram from the interdimensional beings, Ox is used to move the story along just by blathering and gesticulating. Indy is subjected to enough of the same crystal skull brain-scatter so that he can intuitively interpret Ox's snorts and twitches.

As from an old episode of Lassie...

Lassie: "Arf, arf!"

Indy: "What's that you're saying Lassie? The obelisk is the key?"

Lassie: "Ruff!"

Indy: "Of course, that's exactly where we should dig!"

John Hurt was beyond freakazoid until the very end. He finally re-gained his senses and got a shave and a haircut, looking like the John Hurt we're used to seeing. For most of the movie, he looked like a Lord of the Rings leftover.

And enough with the friggin' hat! 3 big close-ups of the friggin' hat, for Christ's sake! By the 3rd hat close-up, I'm thinking this movie is like athlete's foot; you think you're through with it but it comes back again! To think that someone purposely edited that movie to show the godamn, freakin' hat 3 times is ridiculous!

Then there's Indy Jr. and his constant combing of his hair with a switchblade comb. O.K., first you have to endure hat close-ups and now we have Fonzie Jr. or James Dean Jr. combing his hair every 5 minutes. Jesus! O.K., O.K.! Alright already! Indy's hat and Indy Jr's comb. We get it, we get it. Onto the story, please. Oh, that's right, a large part of the story was about how the Russians are a modern day version of the Keystone Cops. Bumbling, haphazard and just generally a day late and a dollar short.

Well, I hope people like movies with close-ups on hats, cuz that's what you're getting with this flicker.

Well, I wasn't going to see it, because, and yes, I'll say it, Ford is just getting beyond an age where that sort of role plays well. And, the story line just sounds a bit much. And it's a shame when they use CGI special effects to cover a lacking plot. But, if it plays into my hat fetish, I may have to rethink seeing it. Oh yeah, hats........ Shocked

The hat even appears before Indy does. The hat is used as the opening segue to Indy's dramatic entrance. And the hat closes the film, providing a final moment of suspense.

An extraterrestrial viewer, unfamiliar with life on Earth, might wonder if this is a "hat species" adventure. The movie could be rebranded as a fedora fetish flick.

Oh yeah, there it is, the hat. Oh man, it is so freaking hot! I can see where they would make it the star of the film. He, I mean, it, has that certain presence that is required in a true star. It can act, dance, and I bet even sing. Is it wrong to love a hat? If it is, then I don't want to be right......... Embarassed

Some spoilers ahead!

I'm not going to get into a big analysis, so all I'll say is that I recognize some of the flaws, but my goal of having fun at an Indiana Jones movie was satisfied! The Last Crusade came out when I was four years old, so I was thrilled to finally see an Indiana Jones movie on the big screen. The age issue was acknowledged appropriately, but Harrison still kicked ass! I loved having Marion back too. I enjoyed the references to the previous films, whether spoken about or through the leitmotifs in the score, but I've always been a sucker for nostalgia. My one major complaint was not bringing John Rhys-Davies back as Sallah! He wouldn't have fit within the main story, but a cameo at the wedding would have been very welcome.

Now it's time to start planning the Halloween costume Cool

P.S. On the subject of movies, Iron Man was great! Highly recommended to everybody, and stay after the credits for a fun surprise!

Does the surprise have anything to do with Samuel L. Jackson?

I didn't watch it yet but I'm one of those that appreciate all the "back in time" movies or series.

So.... VIVA INDIANA JONES 4!!!

I just saw it last night and really liked it. I'ld have made some changes: Added more discoveries and insight into the aliens, shortened the car chase through the jungle (by at least half), had Indi use his head at least as much as his brawn in acknowledgment of reality, but other then that it was very enjoyable.
