..... we would probably be sitting in a jail cell by now.
(CNN) – During a speech before the National Rifle Association convention Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee — who has endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain — joked that an unexpected offstage noise was Democrat Barack Obama looking to avoid a gunman.
“That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he's getting ready to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”
Obama supports extending the assault weapons ban, limits on gun sales, and a national law against carrying concealed weapons, with exceptions for retired police and military personnel. John McCain – whose legislative record was awarded a C+ rating by the NRA in 2004, but has received a perfect score – will address the group later Friday afternoon. His speech will include remarks "on the issue of unconditional negotiation with state sponsors of terror" that aides tell CNN’s Dana Bash are a direct response to Obama’s comments earlier Friday.
UPDATE, 8:28 PM: Huckabee released the following statement regarding his comments Friday, according to the New York Times website:
During my speech at the N.R.A., a loud noise backstage, that sounded like a chair falling, distracted the crowd and interrupted my speech. I made an off hand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama. I apologize that my comments were offensive. That was never my intention.http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/05/16/huckabee-jokes-about-obama-ducking-a-gunman/
Let's keep any comments civilized please. |

A stupid remark, but unfortunately a possibility. It happened to JFK and his brother Bobby. Some people are afraid of changes, afraid of the status quo being turned upside down. I'm not too thrilled about Obama taking office, I have quite a few reservations, just as I did when Bill Clinton took office. But I also didn't bad-mouth him when he was my Commander and Chief, unlike my husband.
8yrs of pure misery in our house. I'll try to respect Obama as my president as it's his right to have that respect, but I'm worried about many of his changes and the attitude of the company he keeps. It might be a matter of reverse racism in this country. Not that I'm pure white but it doesn't matter. Hate is hate generated by a populace that has been put upon by one another for a long time, despite some of the compromises and peace offerings that have been extended. I would just love it if people would get along and work together towards this being a strong and loving country, but I've got a feeling it won't be in my life time. |

| Freedom of speech does have its drawbacks. Not always easy to put the brain in gear (and thinking of the consequences) before spewing off with inane or insulting comments eh? |

People often say things they wish they hadn't when a mic is thrust their way.
For instance, Fuzzy Zoeller got himself into all sorts of trouble with this....
Zoeller's comments at the Masters were: "That little boy (Tiger Woods) is driving well and he's putting well. He's doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not serve fried chicken next year. Got it?"
And who can forget the immortal...
"Star Trek V? Of course we'd love you to direct it, Bill. Now what's it going to be about?" |
