Debb, I have a Rat Terrier, which looks similar to the JRT. He too suffers from allergies, only we don't know what he is allergic to. He only goes outside to "potty" and that is very brief. He licks himself bald. Seems to happen everytime the season changes.
I understand what you mean abot the fleas, if he ever gets one, I too can spot it on his white fur.
I have found a spray for dogs/cats that has aloe in it that seems to help control his itching and help him heal faster. It is a skin care medicated spray. It must not burn because he sits still for me to spray it on him, I think he realizes it helps. |

We used to have a dog when I was little who loved to go roll herself on dead fish when we were on holidays at the beach after a storm.
Oh the beautiful stench of rotten fish......
We'd bath her and as soon as she could she'd escape and come back even more filfy that previously. |
Fish is pretty gaggy, but I think I'd prefer that over the poo! And there's something so rank about dead birds, etc. Sometimes I wonder if it's some carryover from when doggy ancestors would hide their natural scent from other predators or their prey. Oh heck! Maybe they just love the smell of poo and carrion! Nasty little critters! |
So far my dog seems to be put off by the smell of poo. Hope it stays that way.
But he loves the smell of swampy water. |

Westies suffer from skin allergies too. Good regular brushing helps but not too many baths as it strips the skin of its natural oil. And no beautifying products.
Diet is important. Eggs, cheese, milk: a no no! My dog gets tummy ache from wet food. I get him dry food ( sensitive, if possible) and a little meat treat from our meals, but I avoid giving him the fat and no bones. He is not a big eater and I always check he has plenty of fresh water.
I treat him for fleas and they are easy to spot in his white coat.
But if he started suffering from itching I'd get some special products to help. Hope your dog is getting better from his itching. |

Well, the chances are the allergies are food related.
Eddie is not allowed to eat anything except his trout dog food and his vegetarian cookie snacks.
His vet correctly diagnosed his allergies to protein in meat (pork, beef, lamb, chicken).
We've monitored him really closely since his last outbreak and his lick sores are now healing and his bald spots are growing back. He seems better but he still has a couple of weeks to go before all the sores heal up and his skin returns to a normal pinky white instead of red.
