Today I attended Bill's signing at the Barnes & Noble in Union Square, NYC! Here are the details:
I got to the store at around 5:30 and decided to check out the scene before having some dinner. I soon realized that dinner would have to be put on hold, as the dozen or so rows reserved for the signing (in front of a nice stage with a desk and podium) were filling up fast. So I grabbed a seat in the fifth row and the waiting began. Only for Bill would I go without dinner! I spent the time reading Crime and Punishment and the form behind all the chairs explaining the rules for the evening.
At about 7:10, I hear lots of applause and realize the moment has come! Bill walks in smiling with Elizabeth as well, and both looking very good! After a very warm introduction by one of the event's hosts (he whispered into her ear some good things to say and roles to recall), Bill took to the podium.
He opened by observing how fatigued Hillary looks while Barack looks smooth and energetic. He said that after this tour, he feels more like Hillary! With the exception of a few more interviews, he's about done with his book tour and is feeling very fatigued, but said he was happy to have us there to bring the tour to an end. He seemed pressed for time, so apologized for not having the time to "get to know your hopes and dreams." There was no time for a Q&A (I would have congratulated him on Boston Legal's renewal and asked what he'd like to see happen to Denny Crane next season), so the rows took turns lining up.
I had hoped to say a few words to Bill that wouldn't have taken more than 10 seconds (yes, I timed them!), but I quickly realized that there would be time for 80% less than that. I had a moment of eye contact with Bill, said hi, and that it was a pleasure to meet him. That was it – short but sweet!
One interesting moment came when this nutty looking guy (reminded me of Saddam, actually!) came out of nowhere into one of the empty rows and held out his arm for the "live long and prosper" salute...security put a stop to that pretty quickly!
I hadn't realized that I could take pictures of the brief talk (not allowed on the stage during the signing), so I only had my camera phone to take a few blurry shots with. Of course I would have liked a little more time, but I realize how busy and tired Bill is, and you know it's the truth when you're dealing with the always engaged Bill! Hopefully another opportunity to meet the man will come my way in the future...

| One of the rules was actually that the book had to be personalized, on account of the whole eBay thing. I prefer this anyway because I'd rather treasure it than sell it. And yes, just seeing Bill and Elizabeth in person was half the fun! |

Thanks Brian! That was a wonderful write-up, I felt like I was there with you sharing the experience! Really happy for you that you got to see Bill (and Liz) and get your book signed - now that's a keepsake!
Thanks again for sharing!
Best always,
Sandy

I hope that's the case, Jena!
For a good picture of Bill taken at the event, check out the "What's Up Sir Shat" thread – it was taken just as Bill arrived and before he took the podium. |
