speaking of elections, who do you think will win the next election in Canada which might be held this coming November?
Harper, Dion, May, Layton, or Duceppe? |

AN ASB Blog
Well looking at the discussions re the so called Oil Crisis and the influence Bush had on the price, I suspect there are a few Political figures that are delusional about their own importance nad influence.
Bush says lets have off shore drilling and the price drops. Did it drop because of his comment, of course not, it was just a well timed statement after all Bush has really become irrelevant on the World stage. World oil prices have fallen along with every comodity because the market peaked and un-sustainable highs, Gold, Oil, Steel, Diamonds, Bonds every major comodity fell at the same time.
The question is however did the price of fuel in the US rise to a level it should have been and as a result even with a drop in Oil prices will the cost eer drop to the level of 12 nmonths ago. I doubt it, The US uses 25% of the worlds production of oil, far more per head of population than any other country and supply and demand will dictate that the price will go up. The only ways to see the price drop is to reduce demand and it appears that most still believe the solution is to just find more oil. Eventually the reality of the fact reserves are depleating will force a reality check.
The majority of countries around the world pay far more than the US for fuel, this means of course the sellers of oil will just sell to the market that is prepared to pay. If the US wants lower oil costs then it needs to find its own but will the oil companies be happy to get paid less for that oil locally than they can get on the global market. Short answer, no.
The answer of course is to diversify how we use energy, natural gas cars, solar power and wind, smaller cars etc, who is looking at these options and who is ignoring the longer term solutions and is looking for the quick fix that can get a few extra votes.
The calls to get Congress back to deal with this issue are just political grand standing, both parties need to spend some time to find a long term solution, its going to take an assortment of solutions and a real commitment to alternatives. Its an issue far more important than a few electoral votes. |

My fears are happening already....
Man held in Fla. for threatening Obama's life
Suspect held without bail Thursday after a brief court hearing
updated 3:20 p.m. PT, Thurs., Aug. 7, 2008
MIAMI - A man who authorities said was keeping weapons and military-style gear in his hotel room and car appeared in court Thursday on charges he threatened to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
Raymond Hunter Geisel, 22, was arrested by the Secret Service on Saturday in Miami and was ordered held at Miami's downtown detention center without bail Thursday by a federal magistrate.
A Secret Service affidavit charges that Geisel made the threat during a training class for bail bondsmen in Miami in late July. According to someone else in the 48-member class, Geisel allegedly referred to Obama with a racial epithet and continued, "If he gets elected, I'll assassinate him myself."
Obama was most recently in Florida on Aug. 1-2 but did not visit the South Florida area.
Another person in the class quoted Geisel as saying that "he hated George W. Bush and that he wanted to put a bullet in the president's head," according to the Secret Service.
Geisel denied in a written statement to a Secret Service agent that he ever made those threats, and the documents don't indicate that he ever took steps to carry out any assassination. He was charged only with threatening Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, but not for any threat against President Bush.
Geisel's court-appointed attorney declined comment.
In the interview with a Secret Service agent, Geisel said "if he wanted to kill Senator Obama he simply would shoot him with a sniper rifle, but then he claimed that he was just joking," according to court documents. |

greenchick,
I just remembered that you are a Brit. There is so much talk about being green nowadays (it's a dictionary word) that it seems to me as if you were ahead of your time about the green concept.
Of course, Shatner fans always tend to be a little more advanced in their thinking.

I didn't realise how important it is for me to love America, for in the past I have loved America. Seeing the coalition that supports Obama I am so hopeful for America and the world, for America with the rest of the world on her side is so much greater. Don't blow it Democrats, carry on with this optimistic campaign, show America and the world that it doesn't have to be business as usual, we can all work together and together we are so much more than we are separately. We can find solutions to global warming, harness America's great scientific community for the greater good of the world. This generation could be the next great generation.
Read Obama's books, learn what he stands for, refuse to sink to the level of those who attack him for his middle name. What I would give for a politician here who I could believe in the way I do your guy. You are so very lucky, don't blow it! |
