On the one hand, nobody likes to be told what to buy. On the other, maybe sometimes we need a kick in the pants to get us in the right direction. Using better light bulbs would help a little, but it won't solve anything. It's really up to the government to get us on the right track while we do what little we can on our own.
If only we could find a way to get cars running on garbage...with our landfills, we'd be set for the rest of time! 
The Democratic congress gets less credit than they deserve, but there's certainly a lot more they could be doing. They've introduced a lot of new legislation over the past two years, and some of it's gone through.
The cause of a lot of it not getting done stems from obstructionists on the other side who whine about raising taxes (after spending all our money in the first place), and from the President's veto power. It wasn't until 2006 that Bush vetoed his first bill, so that has been a problem as well.
I will fault the Democratic congress on Iraq most of all. They simply haven't fought enough, and have backed down too much for my liking. When you see that the congress' approval rating is so low, it's all because of Iraq. They were largely elected to get us out of there, and it hasn't happened yet. |

| Anyone seen the new Honda commercial that advertizes a car that's run on water? Is it another hydrogen engine? Wouldn't that be something if all you had to do was just put the old garden hose nozzle in the tank and fill 'er up? Wonder how fast it would go? |

| Fuel is over $2.10 per litre here in New Zealand, makes the US price very attractive indeed. The US does not have high fuel costs, in reality it just has paid an unrealistically low price for to long now. Tough as it is to accept, the US still has it pretty good. |

The only person that would have one of those was never going to vote Obama in the first place, I see things like that and to me it just makes the person look bitter.
Obama will win by a landslide. |

Actually, even those of us who live in this country, and get to vote, don't know for sure who will win. I guess we'll find out in November......
I guess I just don't get it. When I lived in AUS, I cared about the political system there, but when I moved back to the states, I stopped being interested. I just don't see why someone who doesn't live here, doesn't get to vote, etc., should be so obsessed with this election, and who wins. We really are capable of running this country without someone from the outside telling us how to do it......  Surely there are things in AUS that warrant your attention? There were a lot of things that use to drive me nuts when I lived there, perhaps you could work on changing your country for the better?  |

Believe me when I say that ASB. Has moved mountains in this small community since coming from Perth. created many jobs, created massive recycling . Got many Disabled people interested in living and working .Running shortly as a councillor in our town to help even more where he can,(if elected) a true Motivator. And tireless worker to improve the lot of disabled people in about 6 towns around us here:) Involving hundreds of people.
As for his political interest I think that comes from having a sister married to an American man for the past ten years.
Plus It is a very interesting Situation you have there. Of course we are all interested.
I know for a fact he is enjoying your views Sue:) You give an insight to the workings of your elections
I never comment in political threads. But I do read them. This is a first for me:)

Welcome to the dark side, Daisy! 
While I was living in Australia, I heard a lot of negative comments about the US. It got really old after awhile. However, in the entire time my husband has been here, over 30 years, he's only heard one negative comment about AUS. We're just not like that here. We're not "knockers". We tend to be a very positive, upbeat society, and it can be hard for us to listen to what seems like constant criticism from other countries.
That doesn't mean that I liked everything in AUS. One thing that I didn't like about AUS was the service industry. That's one reason I believe that tips for waitresses, waiters is such a good idea. You can make extremely good money, if you're willing to work for it. In AUS, the service was genuinely bad in most circumstances.
I was impressed with the fact that the news was world wide. We can be rather insulated here. But I found the newspapers to be rather tabloid, like the Enquirer is here.
One of the things that bothered me the most was a chauvinistic attitude that I found often prevailed. Guys seemed to think that they needed to "chat you up", which was annoying. I couldn't find it flattering, as I felt I could have been 105 years of age, and bald with one eye in the middle and they still would have done it. However, if my husband was with me, it was like I didn't exist at all. For instance, when we were buying furniture, they wouldn't even look me in the eyes. I have to admit I found that very offensive.
I'm guessing Daisy that it isn't all that easy to hear criticisms about AUS, even if I found them to be true. Well, we're the same way here. What others may see as interest, can easily come across as criticisms, or people telling us we can't run our own country. No one likes to hear negative comments about their family, or their country.
There are those who would like to see Obama win, and those who would like to see McCain win. And others who can't stand either one. But, ultimately, we will decide, not the rest of the World. And right or wrong, we will each make our own choices. That doesn't make us bitter, or small minded, or anything, really. We're just free. And that's one very good thing about America! |

Hi Cat, I totally agree with you on the service industry in Australia, I doubt if tips would even make a difference as most aussies are just not that good at service people, its a cultural thing, the aussie bloke thing is pretty spot on as well.
The Americans and Japanese leave Aussies for dead when it comes to the quality of service.
I am a political geek in many ways, I follow the US system for two reasons, its unique in some ways but similar to ours in others, the electoral votes for example is similar to out seat system where it is posible for a person to get overall a higher vote but lose, I agree in this in both Australia and the US as it ensures the smaller states are not swamped by the bigger ones and candidates know they need the support of those thay would ot even consider if it was an overall first past the post system.
I have said before I believe Obama will win because of the tide of change and not due to policy. In our election last Novemner Howard was defeated by Rudd (who like Obama has far less experience) by huge and unexpected margins, the tide of change swept Howard aside.
Don't forget that what happens in the US does effect the rest of us far more than any other election hence our following closely. Also remember in our election Bush made comments in support of Howard on several occasions due to his belief of how important Australia is to the US.
Oh one could also believe the reason there is more said about the US here compared to Australia there is cause we are better than you but saying that would just be mean. After all everyone knows Australia is the greatest country on the Earth. |

Ah, now this is a cool statement! Very cool! I say this because not only does it promote a pleasant environment for all people from all different countries to discuss US politics, but it also contributes to a mature, sane, rational discussion of said topic! Also, I love the logic behind the statement that more is said about the US in Aussieville because of Aussie's superiority! Why, that makes total sense, just like O'bama's campaign slogan of "change". There is no other reason for talking about the US election other than an Aussie mental edge over the yanks! See that??
The coolest thing about people visiting a ".com" messageboard (not .aus and not .uk) is that they can present themselves in a manner in which the yanks will have TOTAL respect for their opinion! I just wish Steve Irwin was still around to piss off some animals, so I can be totally shocked when an animal fights back and attacks him. How in the world did that ever happen? Why, he was an expert with animals! Nothing should have ever gone wrong! Thank God we have that little Mindy Irwin to exploit. Did you see her rap video? I didn't feel embarassed for her at all! No, sir! That was not an attempt at keeping the money pouring in at all! Oh, I digress!
Still no word from the "political geeks" about who the VP for either candidate should be. Hmm, very strange indeed. Perhaps we don't have a clue because we don't know yank politics very well in the first place. |

Johnny I think everyone knows I was having a bit of fun wiht that comment.
As for the VP choices well I just can not get much informaation on each of the posabilities other than opinions from people that I do not know so I don't know the basis they make their assessments.
Obama asked his people to pay off halv of hilaries deb't, there is certainly warming in the camps and this may lead to the dream team ticket after all. |
