The US's biggest airline has cancelled 900 more flights after safety concerns forced it to ground 300 planes - nearly half its passenger-carrying fleet. It is the third day of cancellations by American Airlines. Nearly 2,500 flights have been affected, causing delays for 100,000 passengers.

The action follows an inspectors' warning of problems with wiring repairs on the MD-80 aircraft two weeks ago. Other major US carriers have also been forced to ground planes for inspection. Alaska Airlines has cancelled more than 40 flights, and Midwest Airlines 10, to inspect their own MD-80 jets. Delta Air Lines, which operates 117 of the twin-engined craft, was likely to call off "a handful of flights", the Associated Press reported the airline as saying.

British Airways has delayed moving most of its long-haul flights to Heathrow's new Terminal 5 until June. It is only sensible to ensure that Terminal 5 is operating consistently at a high standard before the move begins," said BA boss Willie Walsh.

The new £4.3bn terminal has been plagued by problems, especially with its baggage handling, since it opened. Almost all of BA's long-haul flights were supposed to switch from Terminal 4 to Terminal 5 on 30 April. The delay in moving will have a knock-on effect on other airlines who had been due to take over Terminal 4 once BA had left.

Those due to move into Terminal 4 include the Skyteam Alliance, among whose members are Air France-KLM, Delta and Continental Airlines.

With all the money these companies make, don't you think they should be able to get things right?

thoughts?

The FAA got fed up with being jerked around by the airlines and finally decided to lay the law down.

They say it will take up to June to sort them all.

I just hope it doesn't disrupt anyone flying to the Shatner weekend.

FUEL TAXES.... I hate them!

In the good ol' days, when you asked a travel agent for the price of a flight, you got an answer that was all inclusive of the seat, food... and the fuel to get you there. These days, due to the fluctuating state of the markets, the Japanese agents tell you the price for the seat... hmm, that's affordable... only to end up adding horrendous charges of an extra $400+ after you have agreed to reserve a seat.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the plight of the agents, but when I call, I want the full price straight up, without any extra charges added later. A flight should be like any other product that I purchase that is tagged with a price. Correct me if I am wrong, but I always thought that I was purchasing BOTH a seat and the fuel to get me there... NOT just a seat, so give me the full price in totality from the start.

ANYWAY, I have my ticket to Egypt already booked for the summer, so I am looking forward to my second trip there. Two years ago, it cost me about $1,150... what a difference a fuel tax can make two years later.... BUT the same flight, with the same carrier, is now costing me $1,600.

I really think it is time to bring back the more luxurious, slower, romantic, environmentally-friendly Zeppelin (Helium, not Hydrogen).
