Hey everyone, remember me?
I haven't had a lot of free time lately to post, but I do try and keep up with reading this BBS. I miss talking to you guys though, but recently I've had a life changing reality. Not really a bad thing, sort of a God send. Read about whats going on at Newsweek below:
http://www.nypost.com/seven/04012008/business/buyout_exodus_104532.htm
I'm one of the 111 who accepted the package, and most of the people I work with are right there with me. I do feel blessed to have had the oportunity to try my hand in media, but it's time for me to do what I'm meant to do, get back to teaching.
So how have all of you been? I'm great, but I realise I've got to get back to the things I've abandoned to work at this mill, and being out of the magazine will afford me more time to indulge my passions, do something that makes a difference, and spend alot more time with my kids.
Oh, BTW, there's this article that was written this week by one of the idiots over at magazine, some of you may have not noticed. Please feel free to post away on the blog against Nicki Gostin, she's an idiot, and thats the nicest thing I can say about her. Read her interview with Patrick Stewart here:
http://www.newsweek.com/id/129592
I sent her an interoffice memo 9am the day the article appeared, and she has yet to respond. Figures. This is the type of person they have set the magazines course on, so no wonder it's going down faster than the Titanic.
My best to all of you, and I hope to get back into the conversations as soon as I'm laid off, um retired, at the end of May.

Well, every cloud has a silver lining.
Are you still hoping to pop over the pond at some point ? We talked ages ago about you visiting. I think you said your Mom was Welsh ?

I am sorry to hear about your job. You do seem to be taking it positively though and that is good.
One of the companies that I work for lost a big client a couple of weeks ago and it has put a crimp in things for us. Luckily, I have another company that I also work for. In my business, it is never wise to have all my eggs in one basket.
I am sure that you will find a teaching position soon. It would seem that schools are bursting at the seems with students and there are never enough teachers to lead the classrooms.
Have you ever done private tutoring? I know a lot of teachers who make good money when they are not in the regular classrooms.
Best of luck,
Sue B |

Captain, you would've been able to conduct a better interview in your sleep! I couldn't believe the questions she was asking Mr. Stewart! After reading your post and links, I couldn't help myself: I had to post a comment. This Nicki person read like she was in grammer school!
Best of luck to you, Captain. Better days are surely ahead now that you won't have to deal with people like Nicki. |

Rather a paradoxical scenario, Captain...

Maybe Newsweek should send her back to school to further her studies on journalism.
My hubby is also one of the unemployed. He got two weeks severance pay. He told me he had seen this coming for some time (he was laid off on February 25th.) He counts it as a blessing after putting up with 5 years of nonsense his boss put him through (promises he made but never kept, the last office space he worked in had no heat in the winter, no air conditioning in the summer...cheap bastard--sorry, had to put that in). At least he doesn't have to deal with that anymore.
He's been looking for work...filed so many online job applications I think his head is spinning (had a two and a half hour interview this past Thursday but hasn't heard from the potential employer yet .)
Oh well, at least at the moment he is collecting unemployment from the state. Until then we have to bide our time (fortunately I have medical coverage through my workplace for my hubby and me thank God.) |

Hey, great, thanks for all the replies!
I'm actually releaved to be leaving Newsweek. It was exciting when I first got there, but recently it's become an all consuming job, my time never being my own, a nightmare. And I can't wait to have time off!
As for coming to England, I would love too, but with the declining dollar not stacking up too well against either the Euro or the Pound, I think it'll be some time before I'll be able to afford a trip like that. Someday I'll get there again.
And yes, Nicki is a stuck up idiot who belives she's a serious journalist. Talk about delusional.
I'll pray for those of you going through tough times.
Thanks again for taking the time to post.

Wouldn't it be a strange turn of events that you being a teacher, were offered a job teaching journalism and her company sent Nicki into your classroom for a refresher course? |

Good for you Captain!!! I do hope you find another job soon too. Your hubby too, Miri!!!
I know how crummy the job market is right now. My dad has been laid off since last March. My mom (dad can't type) put is resume all over the 'net and he has filled out numerous applications. The only thing he's found is a car transporting job--at the same place he worked at when he retired several years ago. It's only part-time though. He had found a full time job, but ended up getting laid off from there. Companies just don't want to hire 60yo people--even though they are more likely more reliable than someone in their 20's!!!! Now my parents are stuck with paying for their own health insurance--a costly deal, and kinda crummy insurance too.
As for the interview, I congratulate Patrick for taking the high road and not getting sucked into her stupidity!!! Good Lord!!!! She really is an idiot, isn't she!!!!!! |
