I saw this on the news and was stunned. (pardon the pun)

Using a taser was excessive. There were several officers there and although he was hard to get him down I think they would have been able to get the cuffs on him. And it was a woman who did it! I think she was too quick on the draw. Knowing there was plenty of media covering the discussion that was a HUGE mistake.

Damn straight! Wink BURN 'EM AT THE STAKE AND EAT THEIR GIZZARDS, is what they used to say.

Funny Harry.

Myabe he did go on a bit, but those security people certainly overreacted and it's caused headlines all over the world.

So trying to quietly lead someone away from the mike after he refused the original polite request is over reacting?!

Everything they did as they went along was always one step behind this guy.

He was asked to leave, he didn't.
-They tried to escort him out.

He resisted the escortation
-They used more officers to escort him.

He said he'd walk and stop resisting
-Most of the officers backed off and he only had a couple with him.

He broke free and ran back to shout some more.
-Officers went back to grab him and three or four escorted him out again.

He resisted even more strongly
-They pushed him to the floor to handcuff him (like they would do to anyone).

He flailed like crazy still resisting arrest (which is illegal).
-They tazered him to put handcuffs on.

Had he not been breaking the law like this, he wouldn't have been tazered. Surely he didn't think that if he threw enough of a fit they were just going to let him stand at the mike however long he wanted to. Confused

In Addition to This:
The mike had already closed, and I'm sure more folks wanted to ask questions. However, Kerry can't sit there all day and all night (as I'm sure students would happily sit up to talk to him) so at some point the mike is going to close, and NOT EVERYONE is going to get to ask a question.

It was incredibly nice of Kerry to try to let the young man get a quick question in after waiting so long, even though the mike was closed.

The fact that this man then refused to quickly come to a point and instead wanted to ramble on complaining about things and sort of asking several questions, was incredibly rude!

And then of course, he refused to leave.

Kerry has been in politics way too long to be bothered about someone "asking the wrong question". He can work his way around something he doesn't like just fine. If you can't do that, you aren't in politics very long! Shocked

This incident had NOTHING whatsoever to do with the "question" the young man was going to ask (that he never actually did in his couple of minutes at the mike) and everything to do with him being a rude and disruptive person in the forum!

Regarding Free Speech:
The right to free speech does not mean people have a right to breach the peace. You are certainly allowed to print pamphlets and talk to people about what you believe at any time day or night. Nobody cares what you say, there are half a dozen people at my University, and one in particular, that say the strangest things (conspiracy theories or ramblings that sound like they may have an undiagnosed mental problem) and nobody bothers them. Heck, occasionally folks walk up and talk with them.

However, if you were to try to use a bullhorn at 2am to announce your beliefs, you are going to be unpleasantly surprised!

People also have a right to peace.

There are many laws here. Yes we have constitutional laws, but b/c of people like this jerk we've had to make laws to protect ourselves from others who would use the original laws to cause disruption and trouble. (it's also illegal here to try to get people together to go commit a violent act, would you argue that that is a violation of free speech too?)
