Good grief !

It took all those folks to bring that skinny guy down... sheesh... our cafeteria ladies could've taken care of him with half the fuss.

The instigator showed that he would not desist after a reasonable request by UF's own police officers on corporate property. At that moment, Meyer was no better than a trespassing thief, taking facility from others and disturbing the peace. It's no less than criminal to command the denial of others' enjoyment of propriety on their turf.

UF had announced that the Q&A session was closed. Meyer willfully ignored the requirements of a corporate event and represented an unknown threat, therefore inviting forceful measures that he couldn't just ignore.

The taser was appropriate and effective for this situation.

It was never his intentions of asking a question. It was all a set up. He even asked someone if the camera was rolling before he started. He set out to cause trouble, not ask any question. He has a history of pulling these sorts of stunts. This time, he took it a bit too far and it nipped him in the butt. Resisting arrest is a punishable crime. If he had simply walked out, there would have been no problem. He wanted to be arrested. I don't think he expected to be tazzored, but hey, that's life.

Incredible! I mean the guy was long-winded, but the security people moved in before he'd got his first question out!
To be tasered for asking what I thought were fairly good questions is just assault, I would think.

The question was why didn't he get his question out before making a long winded speech? The funny thing was no one came to his aid when he was crying out like a baby.

You think that's funny? I thought it was sad!

What I consider funny is that you think his behavior was justified.

Myabe he did go on a bit, but those security people certainly overreacted and it's caused headlines all over the world.

Yes, news like that makes headlines. And that is a crying shame, isn't it?

Don't be surprised if that one gets pulled.

There are tons of videos on this event on YouTube. I'm sure they're on other video sites also.

What I find amazing is that nobody seems to think it strange that university security guards are allowed to taser students. People here have occasionally vaunted America as the land of free speech. Are you sure it's not free speech as long as you don't rock the boat?

I personally don't think it's about free speech at all it's about an agenda being played out; whether it was a commercial play for the book or what - did we ever find out what exactly he was going to really ask?

Kerry answered several of the points the student made and he was asked to step away from the microphone politely and he refused. Then he refused to be led away, as TRexx pointed out previously; it's a quasi public forum (meaning it has different rules than a public forum) and private security forces are able to use force and a taser is probably acceptable force given the student's refusal.

In a Q&A situation; time is of the essence and someone who obviously would not get to the point and would not step away from the microphone when asked becomes a defacto trespasser.

I really don't think the student's factoids from the book really amounted to anything that would be considered "free speech" or the covering up of it. A troublemaker is a troublemaker and you can't bend the laws of free speech to justify your actions as a troublemaker.

If he would have sat down and not moved instead of running and pushing back, I would have more sympathy. I don't think he should have been tasered, but hey that's the price for his 15 minutes of fame. Also you have to look at it from another perspective, was this guy searched for weapons before he got up to ask his question ? Personally I think tasers should never be used, electrical current is to unpredictable to what it might do.
