LIMA (AFP) - Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.
Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.
Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.
Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.
Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.
"Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said.

I saw that story too - first thing that came to my mind was radioactivity.
Wouldn't be surprised to find out it is a nuclear power supply for a Russian or US military spy satellite. |

Peru?
My guess would be that too much stuff, either from the meteor or the ground, was put into the air by the boiling "water" and the concentrations were high enough to make people sick.
They said oxygen was needed, so that also made me think in that direction. |

X-Philes..episode El Mundo Gira with the El Chupacabra. Two brothers who are infected with yellow "rain". It contains alien spores that hyperelevate the growth of bacteria like cold sores or something and it overwhelms a victim who's in contact with the two brothers. They're like Typhoid Mary. The rain falls from the sky isn't exactly a meteorite, but the sickness reminds me of the episode for some reason. It was a good show.  |

I heard about that on the news. Bizarre.
Joe made a good point. I wonder if the object was man-made rather than a meteor. I had been wondering if Vito had spent any time on vacation recently, and might have been flying over Peru??  |
