Hey Caitlin,
I'll be trying to line up babysitting for Daboy on Thursday to go to the book signing here. However, I have no idea what is all entailed in one of his book signings. Does he read/talk a bit? Or is it mainly just the signing and trying to get through a massive line of people?
I only ask b/c he's set up in our biggest lecture room, which sounds like he may be talking.
Trying to have an idea of what time we'll be rolling back home for pick up and puppy potty!
Thanks,
-Cuz |

Usually, he tells a bit about the book, interacts with the audience by answering some questions, and then the book signing gets underway. The more questions asked, the longer he is up there. When I went to Chicago in 05, he talked for quite a bit. (It was awesome to make him laugh when he was being introduced.)
Alan will usually chat a bit with you as he is signing your book. He loves meeting his fans and shows it. You'll have a great time. You can't pose for a picture, but you can have someone behind you or off to the side take a picture while the whole process is going on. I was lucky enough to have brought a camera with me and recorded the whole thing. It was an amazing experience to finally meet him after being a fan of his for 11 years, but that was back in 05.
For the one I'm going to this year, we get a screening of "Same Time, Next Year" and then the Talk/Q&A/Signing. I can't wait, I love that movie and can watch it over and over and over.
(I'm on the right. Awesome seat, huh?)
When I got my book signed and we were chatting. He was tickled at my shirt which read "Its An Alan Alda Thing You Wouldn't Understand" and by the fact that I was only 17 and such a huge fan of his.
Hope you have fun! Let me know how it goes. Tell him that Caitlin from Detroit says hi and can't wait to see him again in Illinois! He'll know who you're talking about.

YES!
I am very much looking forward to making his day a little more surreal. You know, I wouldn't have even thought to check to see if he does book tours if you hadn't posted that thread so long ago!
I should get a t-shirt that says "I'm here b/c of Caitlin" |

Haha! That reminds me of a story my friend told me the night she met him in San Francisco (the next night after I saw him). I used to have a fansite for him and I had talked with a lot of people that had been to my site. (I now have a myspace as the fansite). Anyway, my good friend asked a question that I forgot to the night before. She mentioned that she and I were friends and a woman behind her said "I know Caitlin! She is the one that told me about this. She moderates the best site!" So, the two of them started chatting in the middle of the question, leaving Alan up at the podium pretty much in awe. So, he asked "Who isn't here because of Caitlin?" and that got a good laugh from the crowd. He too also liked the fact that I had a site for him that had all of his work and not just stuff from MASH. I thought it was nice of him to comment on it.
Anyway, thought I'd share that story with you. So, if you were to have that shirt on, it'd give him a good laugh.

I thought it might! I remember you telling that story earlier. It really made me laugh! Thought I'd try to keep a good joke going. Ahh, the power of the internets!
I think I'll see what I can do. I need to go into town tomorrow, and I'll grab a t-shirt and paint.
I'll write down your message and bring that too!
Reminds me I need to work on the camera so I have it all ready to go! Bwuahaha... |

Yeah, he called my two friends the "internet fans". They got a kick out of it. My friend that went there gave him a gift and got a hug from him. Lucky girl!
I can't wait to hear what happens after you meet him. Have fun! (I know you will)

Thanks!!! I've got you on IM so I'll try and grab you the next day and let you know how it went!
My dad heard we were going, I would have invited him, but he has to get up at like, 4am to go to work. He said he'd call in sick if he needed too and definitely wanted to come!
Can you post your fansite? I can't seem to find it on google... |

My fansite used to be www.alanaldafan.com and I'm thinking about bringing it back after I move and get settled in. (I have to pay for my url again) For now, its www.myspace.com/aalda

It was AWESOME!!!
I will make a full report in my LJ later (with pics!) and tell you about it!
Couple quick notes:
-We had to take our 3yr old son with us. Alan loved him! I'm hoping the other folks weren't too jealous of the attention he got... (They didn't seem to be)
-I did mention you at the signing table, we only had a handful of seconds each... I was one of the last quarter or so of folks to go through. Alan was tired (had flown up from San Fransisco earlier) he didn't recognize your name, but I saw a flicker of something when I mentioned that you ran the fan website. I think it was that he knew he knew you, but couldn't actually remember it specifically at the point in time.
You could always mention my family at Chicago and that would probably seal it for all of us!
It was Great times!
More tomorrow!!! |

Argh, got something starting in my tonsils. Yuck.
Daboy has a bit of the runs, though not awful. Was home sick today to take care of him. Pretty tired now.
Will post when I feel better and let you know how things went! |
