The Intruder 1962

Arriving in a sleepy Southern town on the eve of integration, a slick charismatic racist Adam Cramer (William Shatner). Is a man who drifts from one small Southern town to another inciting towns people to riot against court ordered school integration. He is an ominous influence, inciting the towns white citizens into a racial fervour, plunging once quiet communities into a state of chaos.

Directed by Roger Corman

I've never seen it, but it brings up a question. When an actor or actress has to play a role that is so against their own personal nature and beliefs - a racist, a rapist, a pedophile, a mass murderer, a serial killer, etc - is there some part of them that feels - slimy? I know I'd have trouble playing a racist. The thought of the "N" word slipping past my lips makes me shudder inside. Granted, it's a part, a role, not the real you. Yet there must be some part of them that rebels against it.

I would doubt it, in fact I imagine some of the great villain roles are far more interesting and more complicated to play than the straight forward "goody" roles!

Interesting it might be, but it still would pose a problem for me. I've written a few short stories where I made the bad guy (or ghost in one cast) a racist piece of crap - and even though it was kind of important to the story to make them such, it was really hard to type out the words that they had to use and their attitudes because it's so against what I believe.

Thats a good point, i wonder what "inspiration" the actor draws on to play those kind of roles.I wonder what Bill feels about the movie ,today.?

I think it is similar to the question Bill was asked a while back, about how he felt being in a Nazi uniform, in an episode of Star Trek. There must be something in the role, that the actor feels they can bring to it,even if it is totally opposite of the actors personal views and beliefs.I have not seen the movie, it seems to me to be set around the time of Civil rights movement..? so is there some message in the movie about tollerance and racial harmony?, or is it reflecting the mood of "white supremicy " at the time.I am curious about how the movie ends, does Racism triumph ?, or does Bills character come to a sticky end.

Found a Wikipedia entry. Apparently in the US and the UK it has a different title -
Quote:
'The Intruder is a 1962 American film directed by Roger Corman, after a novel by Charles Beaumont, starring William Shatner. Also called Shame in US release, and The Stranger in the UK release.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Intrud ... 62_film%29

Edit: Oh, the Wiki entry gives away the ending. So reader beware.
