There is absolutely no doubt in my mind at all about a studio who`s incompetence and ineptitude would lead them to chuck away a priceless opportunity years ago to make a Kirk resurrection trek movie that would only have been a mega-blockbuster.

I am with Daisy. I for one am not giving up hope just yet. I have a feeling that Bill is going to be involved in the new movie in some way. There are always possibilities. Wink

Yes, Bill, JJ is nuts, and most likely does suffer from madcow.

There's not much to prevent a property master from sneaking some Bill items such as old fan magazines, VHS tapes, action figures, etc. onto the set. That would count as a Shatner cameo of sorts.

I think this is a golden opportunity for William Shatner to play Kirk once again in J. J. Abrams up and coming new Star Trek movie. However I don’t feel he should be playing James. T. Kirk!!!

James T Kirk died doing what he did best, being a hero and saving the day and love or hate Star Trek Generations, it was a fitting end and I think Bill Shatner knew that. Also he died alone, something Kirk mentions in Star Trek V to Spock and McCoy. So it all fits.

The new movie however definitely deserves Bill Shatner playing Kirk though but this time, George Samuel Kirk, father of James and George Samuel Junior. An Iowa farmer that maybe has to deal with his young son James Tiberius urge to explore the galaxy rather than tend the cattle.

Not to mention the fact that I am sure that Bill would relish a role that could possibly involve riding the range on horseback!!!

I'm also up for Tom Cruise appearing as Captain Pike, albeit briefly as a cameo, just as I believe that Leonard Nimoy’s role should be just a cameo as not to take anything away from the young cast that no doubt this movie should hopefully belong to. I am sure that Bill Shatner can only contribute as another cameo and lend his weight and his legacy as a legend in the Star Trek genre in order to rejuvenate the franchise.

Let us not forget there is a chance here once and for all to finally get Gene Roddenberry’s original vision up on to the Silver Screen!!!

Certainly, I agree with you on certain points. You've made a fairly reasonable argument. It is true that Bill would love to ride horses, but I am not sure that he would enjoy playing George Samuel Kirk. Bill has said himself that he 'is Kirk' at the Los Vegas Convention, and I don't think that he'll be content just playing Kirk's father, even if there is horseback riding involved.

As you've stated 'his weight and his legacy' this is a joke, right?

Your last sentence mentions something about TOS and if this new movie was to work (in the TOS era) it would HAVE TO HAVE Shatner as Kirk! I agree that Generations made sense, but there are ALWAYS possibilities in the genre of Sci-Fi, something that you probably are unaware of

Not trying to be mean

I just think Shatner as George Samuel Kirk would be the biggest insult to Shatner, being that he WAS Kirk, and then to be downgraded to a FARMER with hopefully more or less than a cameo? I don't think it would work and Bill would not agree to sign on. When people think of Star Trek they ultimately think of Kirk, maybe Spock. I am not putting Kirk over Spock.

Even if it is the only way to get Bill in the movie, I would rather see Bill as Kirk than a farmer

SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ IF NOT WANTING TO POSSIBLY KNOW !!
Twisted Evil

I know rumours are rife about the plot but one of them actually revoles around Kirk not existing in the first place because bad guys do something sneaky and Starfleet/Spock try to fix it!! So niether a young or old Kirk could possibly appear in it.

Maybe a complete red herring but that's what I've heard.

Still for me, no WS as Kirk, no Hart (or heart !!) It wouldn't be worth me going to see it.

Hart

Well let me start by saying that when I suggested Bill lend his 'weight' to the project, I meant his on-screen presence!!!

Also why I do understand that Sci-Fi can open up limitless possibilities, wait let me think – oh yes, I’M A SCI-FI FAN! I was trying to remain grounded in the fact that like it or not the new movie is supposed to be a ‘prequel’. Surely anything with an overly Sci-Fi orientated plot would be just ‘Star Trek: Generations’ all over again? With the convenience of a Nexus like experience that enabled Kirk and Picard to meet in that movie? I still firmly believe the story ended there. It’s been done.

Harve Bennett once said of Gene Roddenberry’s ‘Star Trek,’ that it wasn’t Science Fiction but it was show about people – he called it ‘Space Opera’. A saga that surrounded a trinity. Namely Kirk, Spock and McCoy. A Captain and a leader balanced by logic on one side and emotion on the other. It’s about the characters! I honestly think that is why the franchise has been failing over the years because the characters have just become ‘flimsy’ or just pale imitations of the original ones.

Whereas in this new movie, although we’re looking at new actors to play the parts, we will be familiar with the characters we’ve grown to know and love over the years.

You could name a million things that were un-likeable about the ‘Star Wars’ prequels (Jeez I know I could) but the initial premise, the idea that George Lucas had to build upon the story and the legend and show the characters beginnings, was a good one. I would hope J. J. is thinking along the same sort of lines, without Ja Ja Binks of course? Although J. J. does stand for something I guess???

No one knows for sure what role Leonard Nimoy's 'Spock' will play in the new movie, I am sincerely hoping it maybe that of an ancient Vulcan, advanced in his years, coming to terms with the absent friends that he has outlived. Who knows what a Vulcan is capable of in that situation?

I am a huge fan of both Leonard and of course Bill (I wouldn’t be on this site otherwise). I have grown up with them both and the only thing I am looking forward to (more than the seeing the re-mastered versions of the original series) is to see this new movie with a young cast and an original storyline, that will hopefully make me feel like I was 10 years old again and that Captain Kirk will save the day! Like he always used to!!!

Bill Shatner’s ‘James. T. Kirk’ died on Veridian III but I still can’t see why he cannot be a father to the character that he brought to life to over 40 years ago and pass the torch once and for all.

At the end of the day if there are fans out there that can’t bear the thought of a movie without the original cast playing a major part in it, then they must be totally against any sort of project to try and resurrect the original series for the silver screen. I for one, can’t wait!!!
