The Lovesick Planet (#1)

Captain Kirk woke from his nightmare suddenly. He pressed the button next to his bed for Sickbay, where Bones was working later than usual. Bones answered. Kirk was suffering from the worst headache of his life. In his nightmare, Kirk was looking over a cliff, and there was a tap on his shoulder.
“James? You’re here. Jim, what’s wrong?” asked a woman’s voice very close to his ear. He turned quickly, catching a glimpse of a shadowy blonde with braids. His hazel eyes searched her blue eyes.
“Janet?” He held both her hands in his. “Janet,” His voice softened. “Janet.” One of her hands slipped from his, and made a gesture towards the moon. She smiled a smile that made Kirk fall in love with her. She vanished when Kirk opened his eyes, waking from the nightmare.
“Jim, are you okay? Jim?” Bones’ voice was heard over the intercom. “Jim.”
“Yes, Bones, I’m here. Bring me a glass of water.”
“Yes, but I’m rather busy at the moment. Can’t you wake Spock?”
“Never mind.” He clicked the intercom off and lay back in his bed. He could see the stars flying past his window as the Enterprise moved with lightning speed. Janet…the only girl I really loved back on Earth…but she already chose her fiancée, that horrid Commander Benegley, before I started dating her. He was quite a narcissist. Surely, she wanted him for his money, instead of me. But I couldn’t stay with her on Earth anyway because of the Enterprise…
Kirk turned on his side, hitting his forehead on a rock. There was a rustle of skirts and slippers on mud. Someone touched his forehead, and he felt the warmth of blood on his dry skin above his eyes. Someone’s delicate hands cupped his face. He could feel her warm breath on his face.
“Who…?” he breathed. He felt a sharp pain in his chest. There were movements to his right, and he felt her hand move to his stomach. She was lying beside him, because he heard cloth rustle and he could feel her sun-bleached hair on his face.
“James.” This alien knew his name. He tried to open his eyes, but the blood was splashing from the gash on his forehead and the pain in his chest was unbearable.
“I’ll take care of you, James.” Somehow, he felt comforted by her voice. It woke something deep within his heart. He fidgeted and tried to sit up, or at least he tried to raise his head. But he could do no such thing…there was a force-field around him of some type, holding him down.
“Relax. I’m not trying to hurt you, James. If you stay still I’ll let the force-field up.”
“Ye…sss….” He took in a breath of smoky air and choked. He could hear her getting to her feet beside him, and he could feel the air shift as she made her hand movements. He sat bolt upright, and came face-to-face with Janet.
“Janet.” He cried, trying to get to his feet, but she pushed him back to the ground, kneeling in front of him. She had the same blonde hair in braids tied with silver ribbons and she was wearing a silvery-green dress of some foreign material Kirk had never seen before. She had many tinkling bracelets on her wrists and one ring of gold with planets on her finger.
“Jan, my engagement ring. But your married to Benegley by now?” She laughed a watery kind of laugh and touched him on the shoulder.
“No, we’re married, Jim. Mrs. James T. Kirk at your service.” She said happily, waving her hand in front of his tired face.
“And…where are we?”
“We’re on Catalos XI. I created this world for you. It’s awfully like Earth. You’ll be contented here, darling. There is fruit on the trees and swallows that nest in those trees. I loved you so much that I could never live without you. Everything is exactly like Earth, even down to the individual blades of grass. You can study the grass for yourself. The force-field has weakened. Only, there are two things,” she explained, pulling him up as she herself got to her feet.
“What, Jan? You’ve replicated Earth exactly.” Kirk stated, looking around. He was now by a swift, flowing river. There was a little village in the distance.
“But…those things are not significant at this time. We have time enough now to rekindle the love between us.” Kirk already felt a fire burning in his heart. He realized why he had fallen in love with Janet: her quick, efficient responses, radiant smile, and her awesome beauty. Janet took Kirk’s hand.
“Jan, I thought…my ring…you threw it down one of the garbage compactors when we went to Starfleet together and I had my promotion ceremony. You said that a floating piece of scrap-metal would be my only intimate companion.”
“I might’ve said those things. I never meant them.” She smiled. She took Kirk’s fingers in her grip. There was certain strength in her hands. He turned, and they were standing by a small thatched house. A girl no older than four ran to Kirk. She had the same sun-drenched, buckwheat hair as Kirk.
“Dad!” She hugged him around the torso and pressed her face into the warm spandex shirt. She was wearing a blue gingham dress with shoulder ties and boots similar to those which belonged to Kirk. He reached out for her chin and tilted her head upwards. There were the same hazel eyes and squarish jaw that Kirk possessed. He looked into her eyes but they were devoid of deeper recognition. He loved children with a certain cutting deference, but, for some odd reason, he could not love this girl. And it was strange.
“Kaya. What does mother say about waiting up for mother and father after midnight?” Midnight? It was completely light outside. This greatly confused Kirk.
“Kaya ‘N’U’Lo, never stay up when the moon comes up.” She repeated disgustedly.
“Jan, its light outside.”
“Oh. I forgot to tell you. This planet…well…in the mornings the moon comes up in the sky and at night the sun comes up and it is daylight.”
