Well according to Channel 4's "viewers vote" it is.

Would you have voted the same way?, If not, what's the War movie, that you would have voted number one ?

I voted YES but…
If I were German I might vote for Das Boot,
and Russians would no doubt prefer Enemy at the Gate
(both great movies)

While I think "Saving Private Ryan" is incredible, most days I'd rather watch "Kelly's Heroes", as watching Saving Private Ryan leaves me feeling slightly Post Traumatic Stress disorderly...

I love the war films of the 60's, movies like The Dirty Dozen, Where Eagles Dare, Guns of Navarone etc. Also, I love the old British films like Angels One-Five.

Platoon got to me really bad. Lots of people don't even mention that one.

I don't really enjoy war movies, but the first twenty minutes of Saving Private Ryan were extraordinary!

I can honestly say that I thought the list was pretty good on the whole... but I still thought "Glory" deserved to be higher than 68th in the rankings... its one of my all time favorite films overall, not just in the war movie genre.

But what do I know...? Razz

I liked that film too! On a similar theme, "Les Indigenes" was fascinating too, about the unknown contribution of North African fighters to the french war effort.

Yes! That was the big thing about it I think.

I still think All Quiet on the Western Front should be required reading at the high school level! Idea

I think Joe is right too, your favorite movie will probably be the one that best describes an aspect of the war from your country's angle.

I would put up movies like:

Battle of Britian
Tora Tora Tora
Saving Private Ryan (wow, too close to my son's name, just mispelled it! Embarassed)
Das Boot
...argh. And the other one about the famous turning point battle in the Pacific...my mind is going completely blank on this one! D-something.

As my fav. WWII ones.

Can't remember Platoon (though I hear it was very good). Forest Gump was cool!

I've never seen "Les Indigenes". I'm going to have to put that on my 'to watch' list since you mentioned it.

Wink

About "Glory" though, it was rife with juicy scenes where the acting was absolutely superb.

Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Carey Elwes, Morgan Freeman, Jihmi Kennedy, and Andre Braugher FTW!

Cool

You can send them to war where they might be killed, but you can't slap 'em. -Simpsons. Laughing
