Got NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's email address and sent him an email; sent it about 24 hours before Goodell announced Michael Vick's "indefinite suspension." Doubt my email had any impact whatsoever.
Here it is:
Dear Commissioner Goodell,
It's unlikely you'll ever see this email. It's likely your staff will intercept it and, at best, I receive a prepackaged response. Nevertheless, for the NFL's benefit, this has to be said…
Michael Vick must be given a lifetime suspension.
Not for legal or moral reasons, albeit there's compelling legal and moral justification, but for marketing and public relations reasons.
You've already seen the signs: "New team name? Dog killers?"
A NFL player may be given a pass on cruelty to humans, but giving a player a pass on cruelty to animals will decimate the NFL. This video expresses it well, please watch it.
Animal cruelty triggers a powerful public emotional response. Giving Michael Vick anything less than a lifetime suspension establishes a nexus between the NFL and cruelty to animals. Anything less than a lifetime suspension means, at some level, the NFL is willing to forgive & forget, willing to tolerate animal cruelty.
And no amount of verbiage will change that perception. |

They are selling one of his football cards that was chewed up by a dog on e-bay. Quite a popular item.....
There are also now Vick doggy chew toys, and people are sending jersey's with his number on it to animal shelters to be used as rags. I hope this sends a very real message out to anyone who abuses animals. |

A lifetime suspension sounds good to me!!!
He never really played very well in the NFL anyways...... A bit over-rated, in my opinion...... |

Yes! That is frequently forgotten on cases like this.
How many "Free kittens to good home" and "free dog to good home" ended up there? I remember reading a book by Stanley Cohan(?) "Why does my dog ACT that way" that detailed dog fighting in a chapter. One of the people they talked to explained how his wife would dress up nicely to go "adopt" one of those "Free to good home" animals from the owners, and then bring it back so he could use it to train the fighters. And yes, they were killed. |

Gee, I wonder if this nicely dressed lady and her husband would like to be left in a lion's den to be mauled as a training exercise. Just a thought. |

Just a tib-bit: in regards to above, you began your letter with a negeitive approach.
Good luck!

1. I don't believe in paid, professional sports anyways.
2. I am listening to a special talk show about the Vick situation and his words of apology are not believable. He is just trying to get his job back.
3. He should never, ever play again.
4. I am concerned that people who abuse animals, also abuse people.
5. If I were a vindictive person, I would stick him in a bucket of water and through in a plugged in radio. |

U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson will sentence Vick on December 10th. He can accept the federal sentencing guideline of 12 to 18 months … or he can impose the five year maximum sentence.
Acceptance of responsibility is one of the factors Hudson will consider.
So between now and December 10th, Michael Vick will be apologetic, very apologetic. |

I have zero sympathy for that poor excuse for a human.
As a faootball fan, father of a seven year old who idolizes some players and loves football, and as an animal lover and owner of an old American Staffordshire Terrier, I hope they fry his behind.
First, for violating the law;
Second, for harming and killing animals that, properly loved, cared for, and raised by responsible persons, would probably been wonderful pets for someone (Note: I doubt all of the dogs would have been able to be raised as pets, since they were deliberately bred for fighting);
Third, for tarnishing the name of football and Pit Bulls even further;
And, lastly and most importantly, for setting a horrible example for children who looked up to him as a role model. (Although, I don't know why a child would idolize him after the "Ron Mexico" fiasco)
I did not try to tell my child who to look up to, but rather, I tried to guide her to make choices she could be proud of. Her 'football heroes' are Marshall Faulk, Marc Bulger, and Kurt Warner. (Yes, they all wore the horns...) Their conduct off the field, as well as on, has been something I can encourage my daughter to use as an example. She isn't happy with ConVick, er, Vick, and thinks he should be permanently banned from the NFL, then be lock in a room full of Pit Bulls that have been mistreated by people like him.
Jerks like Vick make me want to puke. He admitted his guilt, and I wonder: If he abused animals, what was next? A child? |

Absolutely! We need to get the Roman Colosseum(sp?) back up and running! |

Well, I'm watching the Bengals/Falcons game on ESPN right now, and if they bring on one more guy to defend Vick, or have one more person talk about his character, I'm done. Vick was an over-rated player IMHO to begin with, and I hope they throw the book at him. He belongs in jail, and yeah, if he could do that to an animal, what would he do if given the chance at a child?
He needs to deal with Bubba in the shower....
A very poor excuse for a human being. |
