Post subject: 'shocked by the lack of care'

A report by a committee of MPs and peers warns that many hospitals and care homes are not protecting the human rights of older patients.
They are calling for new measures to tackle the situation, and ensure others do not have to endure sub-standard care.
Sue McMahon's father Wallace Beaumont went into hospital in Greater Manchester in February 2005 aged 87 with slight breathlessness.
He had exhibited similar symptoms in the past, which were related to his Parkinson's disease, but they were always previously treated by his GP. He had wet his bed and night clothes and was crying .While he was in hospital, Sue had to change her father's clothes for him, give him drinks and feed him.
His clothes were stolen, and on one occasion he was left with just a top on.

How can things like this be allowed to happen in this day and age,.?.It shocks me as well.

Its because NO ONE CARES!
My grandmother died in a nursing home up the street from my Dad, and he would visit once a month, while I would once every other, her name was Gertrude, they called her "Gertie" much to her horror.
After a series of strokes she really couldn't talk so she couldn't vocalize her disgust, other than her facial expressions. I tried to explain that never in her life that shes been called that and would they stop calling her that, they told me she'd better get used to that.... But when she finally passed away, she was left with some pictures, SOME clothes, some Christmas items, AND a tv.... 
Its pathetic, and heartbreaking. |

We just had a case here where someone was taking advantage of handicapped people by taking their social security money and then forcing them to live in cramped, unairconditioned rooms in horrible conditions.
Even as far as hospitals go, when my mom was in the hospital, my sister and I took turns staying with mom, especially at night. We did help the floor nurses by making sure mom was comfortable and had water. (little stuff) We were also mindful of any techs who came in. One time a tech came in and was about to run a test on mom. I asked what she was doing, and she responded by saying, "I am here to do a test on ____." She had the wrong person. She needed the person in the next bed.
It is such a shame that our elders are treated like yesterday's garbage. |

I still have nightmares about the hadeshole my grandpa Russell was in. He had what they claimed was Alhemizers (but more closely mimiced long term lead poisoning, he and his sisters all exhibited it and grew up drinking well water). If they knew we were coming, they'd bathe and shave him and get him out of the bed. But if we dropped by unexpectedly he'd be sitting with food crusted in his stubble and unwashed. Since we lived in California and the home was in New Hampshire we didn't have much pull.
I hope my parents never need a home. (There's no way we kids could care for them, honestly. Todd's alcoholism makes him too unpredictable and abusive, Mark lives too far away, and Paul flakes out on stuff all the time to go to other places. Which leaves me and I just don't have that kind of energy.) But if they do you can be sure I'll ride the staff's butts to provide decent care for everyone or face a lawsuit. |

If we were still guided by judeo-christian mores some things would still be automatic, CaptLogan. People would automatically know without having to be told that the elderly are to be treated with deference and respect but when the left in america trashed traditional standards of morality, they were trashing alot more than they realized. That`s what comes from thinking no farther then the end of your nose. |
