I am getting really tired of turning on the news every night and hearing of more places getting stripped of copper wiring.... homes, churches, businesses, and now whole neighborhoods.
It seems that even neighborhood phone lines are not safe from would be thieves.
What is worse is that scrappers are encouraging all of this behavior by buying it from the thieves and then turning around and shipping it off to China.
You know what? I am getting one of those sick feelings about the next Olympics being held in China. If that is the sort of business that they are doing, I am not sure if I would trust them to take care of any of my children while over there; plus, you know how hard they are on their athletes.
Sorry for the rant, but I am fighting very hard not to become prejudice against a whole people because of what some unsavory business folks are doing.
Any of your neighborhoods getting stripped of your copper? |

We get 911 calls all the time about this. Mostly, it's people stripping aluminum siding off of houses---and it doesn't matter if anyone lives there or not!!!!
They steal copper, aluminum, insulation in the winter (yeah!!! the pink stuff right out of your attic!!!), wiring, etc. We've even had calls from new construction sites where entire furnaces have been stolen!!!! Hot water tanks, air condition units (the big outside units that sit in your yard), appliances. It's crazy!!!
When people are doing this, it's a sure sign that the economy is crappy. Seriously. The price of scrap metals goes up when the economy is in the crapper.
Bank robberies are on the rise around here too.
Some dude died earlier this year trying to steal the porch railings off of an abandoned house!!! Pulled the dang things off, with the porch still intact!!! The porch roof fell on him and killed him. Serves him right for trying to steal something that didn't belong to him!!!
Sorry, my sympathy level for people has become extremely low since I started working at 911. The things people do to each other is mind boggling. |

| It's Americans who are a) stealing the copper and b) shipping it off to China so using that as a reason to distrust the whole Chinese nation does seem a little illogical! |

| Who says it's just Americans? I'm sure people in other countries are doing the same thing. |

CHINA has been called to task by Amnesty Intl. for NOT implementing the human rights and religious freedom issues it promised to get the games in the first place.
They arrest any religious group they want...most recently a group of protesters wanting Tibet to be free )200 arrested) , christian missionaries have been beaten and jailed and on and on.
Internet cafes have been shut down and now all such remaining places have tracking so the govnt can identify people going to sites prohibited....in addition to Google and Yahoo search engines prohibiting search sites for things like ¨Dali Lama, Tibet, freedom, etc. etc.
I never thought they should have gotten the games in the first place and am proved correct by their continuing behavior. |

China must be profiting from the stolen copper and other items, because they are accepting the shipments. If the market were not there, there would be no thievery.
I am not saying that Americans are completely innocent in all of this. The scrappers are encouraging it and are profitting as well. |

On a similar note, did you know that each US nickel has almost 10 cents worth of copper and nickel in it? And that congress had to pass an emergency measure making it illegal to melt them or ship them to a foreign country (to be melted). Each new nickel costs our government over ten cents to make!
Pennies being almost pure zinc are a big loser too now that even zinc has risen, nobody wants them, nobody uses them but we keep making them at a loss... Sounds like a theme we got going... |

Quite true.
Though when you add the other stuff going on with China (pet food poisonings, lead paint in children's toys) it doesn't give them any extra points |

Actually if you look at crime satistics you'll find that the majority of criminals are illegal aliens who still claim allegiance to their country of birth while using America's laws and freedoms to benefit themselves. Just stating facts here. Me, if you obey the laws of our nation once you're here I don't care if you're an illegal alien or not. But if you come here and break the law constantly then expect our justice system to reward you, get out. (Frankly, same goes for the legal citizens too.)
I'm sure some are Americans, naturalized or otherwise, but you just can't assume that they all are. That's just as bad as assuming that all of them are illega aliens. |

Most of the people who have been caught stealing copper and other metals here in Florida are from South America, Central America, or Mexico. Most of those people are either illegally here or who have managed to get work Visas for other types of employment, but once here, turn to a life of criminal behavior. This also includes dog fighting. |
