" I think he has aquitted himself well during this visits and has shown the ability to laugh at himself with us. We should all be so secure. IMHO"
Now I'm told most "stars" ( no not the balls of gas in the sky that implode after zillions of years) usually have some security system to counter any insecurity. Its called FANS hehe ahem.
But yes it seems to be mr Shatner has a healthy dose of humor, selfknowledge, ego and talent. And from my own experience I know it also takes carefull planning and a lot of energy to be spontanious
Humor and talent to pull it off, because many people can laugh at themselves, just a few are funny doing it. |

Definately have to agree on that TOS (never seen this used before, in this way was wondering why people where talking about the William Shatner Terms Of service ) has some brilliant comedy moments in it. DeForest Kelly was a master of understatement and the chemistry between Kirk, Spock and Bones only got better through the years. A perfect triangle of caracters, something they tried to dupe in Deep Space 9 and TNG. (Quark and Odo had a pretty good comedy shorthand)
Actually saw the Belushi pardoy on SNL when MTV broadcasted the repeats here in Europe, very funny. What a talent and what a shame he spoiled it for us by dying (Belushi that is)
and Yup El Dutcho land here, also known as The Netherlands or Holland. (Hollowland??)
Actually making comedies was my big ambition ages ago, but oh well. Who knows
So where you from, you must know some dutch if you can guess my names origin.

Yeah, this BBS tends to wander off thread topics pretty regularly.
I haven't seen any of Shatner's recent work, so can't comment on it, but I agree that the reason TOS succeeds so well is the comic timing of Shatner as well as other cast members (Kelley and Nimoy for example). Really dead on parodies of the show pick up on the timing element--for example the Belushi parody of Kirk on SNL--and crank it up a notch.
Are you in Holland, by the way?

It also gives me a great opportunity to say something I have been stuck with for a long time: I think William Shatner is one of the funniest comedy Actors I know. Not ust because he's a funny guy, there are loads of funny guys. (my granddad is hilarious after 3 beers) But timing, knowing what works, especially sending up your own image in such a underplayed way. Gotto love it.
I dunno Bill, maybe you should talk to Robin Williams and do some of his standup shows Or do a real leading role in a comedy, ok its a lot more work then just a showstealing cameo but we get more out of it hehe. |
Hi maarteen,
welcome and hello from England!
I agree with you about W. Shatner.
He is really funny in comedies. I love his acting in "Third Rock From the Sun". And what about "Miss Congeniality"? Great!!!!!
He is also extremely funny in his writings: "I'm Working On That" which deals with rather obscure scientific topics is somehow made really interesting and accessible to the unscientific minds in a truly hilarious way.
But the novels written by W.S. can also be deeply moving though the feelings are always shown in a restrained way.
He somehow has the magic touch.
All the best,
Claudia. |

No, don't know any Dutch, but recognize the double a in words as more common there. Also your avatar painting looks like a Rembrandt (and also sorta like Sam Kinnison), and you said you weren't in the US. I took a guess.
I've spent a few days in Amsterdam, but beyond that little familiarity with your country.

Hi,
Thanks, England, thats pretty close. I got a lot of relatives across the pond, most of them are in Glasgow.Only my uncle lives in Manchester, he does something with Soccer there lol
Thir rock fromt he sun! Now there is a silly show and indeed Mr Shatner was brilliant in that. Still have to see Miss Congeniality though, didn't know he was in it.
Its intresting to know his books can have such an impact, I never read any of them. Perhaps because of the comedy never thought about picking up one. Always accosiated mr Shatner with the visual medias I guess. Definately worth a second look !

Ah right, well brilliant guess work, been part of a big online graphical chat community called "The Palace" for over 6 years now. Of the thousands of people I've met online your the first to guess it correctly first time.
Not sure but Indiana always had a bit of a fantasy ring to it, maybe because the word India is in it lol. As for the Avatar, well its a photo of me edited into a rembrandt. Long story hehe but what it comes down to was people where fighting and I posted this pic as "the FAT lady who was singing" to end it all.
Its intresting to see how someone like W. Shatner draws people together from allover the globe, you really DO need a sence of humor about it or you end up thinking your god.
(actually know people who run online chat communities that think they are god, they are NOT funny)

Most of us have god/goddess names....LOL...mine is
The Morrigu (or Morrigan) represents the Crone aspect of the Goddess. She was a Celtic War Goddess who delighted in setting men at war. She fought in battles herself, and at times hovered like a crow over the warring men. She was represented as fully armed, carrying two spears in her hand, and wherever there was war, she was there. Her battle cry is said to be louder than that of a thousand men. She had a sort of Love-Hate relationship with Cuchulain, who refused her. Afterwards she fought with him and attacked him in three different forms. Cuchulain wounded her, and later she came back to him in the guise of an old woman to have him heal her wounds, for only he could do so. After that she became his friend and helped him. |

Mr. Shatner seems to be engaged in some "comedy" which I personally feel is beneath him. I try to tell myself that he is receiving bad advise on how to appeal to certain "target" audiences in the world. In my opinion he is doing this at the risk of losing an audience he already has. Doing comedy shouldn't have to cause him to give up his "dignity". If I had a say in what he did, I'd advise him to give up the vulgar slapstick, and shock-jock type of routines, and retain his dignity.
~Dave |
Bill has made it clear how willing he is to laugh at himself. He dosn't need to worry about his dignity, it's pretty clear we'd give him as much dignity as he needs.
The comedy isn't beneath him, and I think is just makes him look better

Indiana as fantasy...hmm...never thought of it that way before. There's nothing really exotic about it at all. Lots of farmland, mainly corn, with a few industrial cities mostly in the north. Upper part of the state is very flat (glaciers came as far south as the southern part of the state). Politically Indiana tends to be pretty conservative.
Tee hee--avatar explanation is funny.
Speaking of graphics--I'm off to campus to scan some slides, so I must leave this conversation.

Hi Sara:
This will sound neutral (Two-way street) at any hoot, I agree with you and with Dave to a point. How can I explain this without putting down the old timers ...Here's an example, my father only saw William Shatner as Captain Kirk and that's all (too bad for him), since Bill did the first Priceline commercial my father was VERY disappointed. I can't remember word-for-word but my father said something like "why would he stoop so low..etc..etc". NOW my father was NOT being disrespectful, he was just DISSAPOINTED.
The younger (newer) generation like yours had tasted more of Bill's work if you know what I mean.
Take care,
Doc |

Well that sounds pretty familiar, when you know someone has certain abilities you know a talent. It can be painfull or dissapointing to see them use it for something far below theyr capabilities. Perhaps a bit like if Michael Jordan would end up in front of you house picking up garbage.
It feels a bit like they have fallen down some of the steps they climbed. Some of the magic is gone and they turned into people who just need money like everyone else. Wich is btw what Michael Cain said when they asked him "why do you sometimes make such terrible movies?" and he said "if you want to see me in better movies, you make one and hire me, I'm just an actor for hire and need to pay the rent like anyone else."
I dunno, perhaps we like to see our heroes end up in the golden spotlight. They are afterall immortal and a lovely fantasy |

I haven't read this whole thread yet
and who knows how it's evolved so far,
but this sentence cracked me up, maarten!:
"Showtime was a good example btw, I think if anyone can upstage Robert de Niro and Eddy murphy in the same scene, screw dignity "
