Right, hi everybody. Wow a William Shatner site, it must be great having a living temple for yourself
It also gives me a great opportunity to say something I have been stuck with for a long time: I think William Shatner is one of the funniest comedy Actors I know. Not ust because he's a funny guy, there are loads of funny guys. (my granddad is hilarious after 3 beers) But timing, knowing what works, especially sending up your own image in such a underplayed way. Gotto love it.
I dunno Bill, maybe you should talk to Robin Williams and do some of his standup shows Or do a real leading role in a comedy, ok its a lot more work then just a showstealing cameo but we get more out of it hehe. |

I think that's right. With one reservation.
Mr. Shatner seems to be engaged in some "comedy" which I personally feel is beneath him. I try to tell myself that he is receiving bad advise on how to appeal to certain "target" audiences in the world. In my opinion he is doing this at the risk of losing an audience he already has. Doing comedy shouldn't have to cause him to give up his "dignity". If I had a say in what he did, I'd advise him to give up the vulgar slapstick, and shock-jock type of routines, and retain his dignity.

~Dave | I agree with you Dave, as I have noticed this especially on some, not all, talk shows. He's a naturally funny guy with lightning quick wit. No need for shock-jock stuff.

Hmm I dunno I either have missed those shock jock comedys or your taking it all a lot more serious then I am. The whole issue of dignity, I think anyway, is also a personal one. If you can have fun with acting the fool, why not? My personal motto is: You can be what other people think you should be, or you can be yourself. Sure that choice becomes a bit harder in the spotlights (specially if you want to sleep) but still.
Showtime was a good example btw, I think if anyone can upstage Robert de Niro and Eddy murphy in the same scene, screw dignity |

Dave, you really need to loosen up. Watch some Stooges or something. If Bill is still working in entertainment, it's because he wants to, not because he has to, so I expect he enjoys what he's doing. Let him worry about his dignity, you worry about whether or not Bush will last his full term. |

I'm not about to loosen up to the extent of accepting rap-style profanity from anyone, including Mr. Shatner. Words like "Ho", and "mo fo" are euphisims for language which Bill would never permit, or accept on this BBS. And I don't accept that stuff from him. Sorry, that's just the way it is.

Dave,
That's the reason we have euphamisms. "Gosh-darned" and "heck" and "fudge" are no different. Are you telling Shatner it's bad for him to swear? Ya know, I'll say all kinds of things to all kinds of people, but I don't presume to offer men in their 70s my opinion about their language when it's not directed at me.

Of course, that advice is coming from someone whose avatar is an amphibian in a jar.

You can accept whatever you like, from whomever you like. For me it's a matter of degree, you mo fo, you. Oh, but it's only ok if it's not directed at you. Sorry. Once you accept something, it's difficult to impose limits.
And I seem to remember many here turning to give this man in his 70's advise on how to form a "correct" opinion when he said that America was the greatest country on earth.

Dave,
Whatever. I can find more serious things to be offended by than Mr. Shatner's use of euphamisms on TV...
I don't remember anyone giving Mr. Shatner advice on how to "form a "correct" opinion when he said that America was the greatest country on earth." Perhaps you could be more specific about what you are referring to. I've never noticed Shatner participating in the political threads on here, or even being referred to in them outside of the debate on whether Shatner would prefer politics be/not be discussed on here period.
