Post subject: Ignored or Ridiculed?

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you are among people who seem to be looking right through you as if you weren't even there?
For example, going to a business conference and seeing people who are dressed nicer, drive newer and better cars, and here you are dressed in your best clothes, but maybe not designer outfits like everyone elses.
or, it you are actually invited to join a group by a friend, but when you get there some of the other members question why you are there as if you were some street bum who just stumbled into the room.
or going into a high-end clothing store and having the clerks stare at you instead of assisting you and wondering to themselves if you are there to shop or to rob the place.
or going to a new place of worship for the first time and getting looked at as if you were the Devil himself walking through the door.
Some of these examples may be exaggerated a bit, but I think you get the idea. I am sure you can think of other experiences.
So, if you have ever found yourself in one of these, or similar situations, how did you handle it so you came out on top of the situation? |

It sounds as though you might be speaking from experience ...in which case, I would suggest that you simply stop showing up at Star Wars conventions dressed in your Star Trek costume (those Star Wars fans take themselves waaayyyy too seriously).

  Yes, I have experienced it a few times. I can't be the only one though.
btw, I own a ST uniform, but have never gone to a Star Wars convention, or even a Star Trek convention for that matter. The only time that I wore it was when I was working at a grocery store and we had to dress up for Halloween. I did run into one customer who came into the store wearing a NG blue uniform. We hiy it off right away. But then, two Yodas showed up I must admit, the shoe was on the other foot, because we tended to ignore the Yodas. |

Yes, my daughter's school. Other mothers look down on ones who don't have designer clothes and SUVs that aren't plastered with soccer stickers, constantly yakking on their cell phones. I don't always fit in with that set. I'm more of the mom who hasn't bought clothes in ten yrs and constantly wears flip-flops until winter. I drive a Saturn  Though I do have a cellphone. I'm not an attorney or a wife of one, just a plain ordinary old blue collar housewife. Tends to cramp alot of people's styles when I show up for school parties and such. I don't give a s**t. They can like me for who I am or not. I'm not out to impress anyone. |

I usually make my own clothes. Any store clothes are gifts. I figure it this way. Why would I want to wear clothing with someone else's name on the label? Whoever they are, they probably dont give a sh*t about me and would be one of those who looks through or past me anyways.
I remember going to a Pi Gamma Mu initiation ceremony once. We had invited the qualifying students to come to the ceremony. When they came, we were mingling with the students in casual conversation. I did my best to talk to everyone. There were a few students who sort of tolerated me and spoke to me in a barely civil way. When it came time for the ceremony to begin, our director got up and called the president of our Pi Gamma Mu chapter to the podium. Guess who got up? Me. I had purposely not told the newbies that I was the president. I wanted to get a feeling of their personalities. I did.
Afterward, some of those students who had been almost rude, did some fast back peddling to get into my good graces. I didn't care, one way or another. As a sociologist, my experiment was complete.
I know, I can be sneaky sometimes. Tee hee, but that is what sociologists do sometimes. |

I like your tactics. I'm a student, a lame one, though, of human nature. I tend to misjudge alot of times. But I love to people watch. That was some fine tactics on your part to find what they were like. They should never judge a book by it's cover. |

Yes I did....most part of my youth ...
I was and still am just 5 feet tall or better said short....a redhead and "blessed" with a cup DD...
I got either ignored or bullied ,but I got back at all of them by getting married to a wonderful man....giving birth to the greatest son a mom could ever wish for....getting a daughter in law that loves me like her own mom and finaly feel secure and happy with who I am.
The girls that laughed at me for being short and what the called fat ,didn't do well in the end.
One died having an overdose.....one died in a car accident while racing with a stolen car and the girl that used to tease me with my DD ended up in jail for prostitution and drug dealing...
I didn't have to do anything, they did it to themselfs.
Funny thing is though.....I honestly feel sorry for them  |

That fact that you express feelings for those girls just goes to prove that you are a far better person than they could ever dream to be. |

You are kidding cousin angel....of course I saw it.....
but it still happened, before you were here to see it...
I was the "token" then...and was ridiculed for talking about "Indian" stuff..
That's before we got a little Inter-Tribal thing going
My point was...I have experienced what Sue has ( and did the sneaky little interaction, in the past,as well)
I've always said the BEST revenge is Living a GREAT Life !!!!
So if ya get pissy ...avoid the shoes....they're suede |

Okelie Dokelie, LittleStar, you're still aces in my book, though.
Being a part of this little Indian band is an interesting experience.
I might look Indian, but I don't live it. I've never been to a powwow, though the singing that I've heard raises goosebumps on me. I've never been to the Red Earth Festival, but I can identify with it. I've even got a few prints of Indians in my house, but for the most part I just don't live it. Most everyone over here has Indian in them. It's no more different than going to Wisconsin and bumping into someone who's of Dutch or German descent. I can't document my descent unless I were willing to spend alot of moolah to do so. Why prove it? My looks speak for themselves. If I want to know about the old ways I read a book. My mom has Indian in her family too, but she identifies more with her Irish and German roots. And even after that she just says that we're all Americans and that's it. Period. I don't like to think of myself as someone who stands out and feels segregated because of skin color. Some of the people who tote the Chickasaw and Creek Nations on commercials over here are whiter looking than me. I feel over all that I'm just a person. And the one thing that makes me stand out with the people over here is the fact that I'm too broke to buy designer this and that. Oklahoma is the Red Man's land. We're legion here. Don't mean all that much in my part of the state. Just people like everyone else. Unless you want to say it all the time. Then you'll stand out for sure. I've only known one pure blood Seminole and I don't know what she did on her own time, but she didn't get all on the defensive over being Seminole. I don't because I've got a bit of Creek and Muskogee in me. It just is. As it is for me being a lot of European bloods too. A heinz 57. No biggie. |

I would guess that everyone has felt that at one time or another.
When my son was younger, I went to a home school group held at a local church. Most of the people there either attended the church, or had known each other for years. Anyone new, they pretty much ignored. Pretty sad that often a house of worship can be such a cold place. I mostly went for my son's sake, so I just spoke to other new people, and tried not to let it bother me. |
