My oldest daughter is about to get her drivers permit , so we are currently in negotiations about a second car for her to learn in and eventually drive. There's no way she's going to learn to drive in my car (Mercedes), and she'll need something reliable for school eventually.
So I got to thinking about my first car. Dating myself greatly, mine was a 1967 Ford Falcon, ten years old at the time. I worked at McDonalds for 2 years in order to buy it.
So, what was your first car? Did you buy it yourself or did your parents buy it for you?

I used to have a 53 Ford. It was a great car. My parents still have it sitting in their side yard. We bought that car when we first moved to Florida. My dad drove it to work every day for years. After my folks got a new car, I drove the Ford while I was in high school. I loved that little car. I could do most of the everyday maintenance on it because it didn't have all that computerized junk on it. Just car and engine.
There were plenty of times when the new cars broke down, and who would come to the rescue?...... The little Flathead engine Ford. |

I had a 1991 Toyota Camry. That car was a champ. I gave it to my uncle and it was given to his daughter when he died.

1990 Ford Escort. We got it used when I was 7yrs old.
When I was going to college (and finally couldn't take the bus anymore, b/c I had to drive to the bus stop by then...) my mom gave me the car as a "graduation" gift of sorts.
I then promptly spent 1800 on it to fix the front end that was... how did the mechanic put it?
"Must've been an interesting drive here..." he said with a raised eyebrow
"Yeah, I did kind of have to keep the wheel a quarter turned to drive straight." I shrugged.
"Well, you don't have to get it fixed here. But I can't let you drive it out of here...." he was chuckling a bit, but a little nervous that I would try to drive it on the road again.
"Okay" another shrug. Dad and I had done our homework and these guys were some of the best around.
They put it right and it served me another 3 years. Total mileage on the car when it was finally falling apart in too many places to fix was: 326,000.
Awesome car! Did great in snow too! |

| A silver 1978 Ford Bobcat with ripped red leather interior. Ate up four quarts of oil a week. Paid $800 for it back in '87. |

| My first car was a 1977 Chevy Monza Spider. It was 3 years old when I got it in 1980. I didn't buy it. My grandmother bought it for me. I loved that car. |

My first car was a 1980 Chevrolet Malibu. Liked it for a time til it started to give us trouble (traded it in for a Jeep.)
(I was a late bloomer in getting a driver's license, oh well.) |
