Hearing all this propaganda about the new Star Trek XI film coming out, and the controversy on ways they may / may not bring the REAL Kirk back has gotten me thinking about his shameful and meaningless death in Generations. I could go on about how disgusted I felt (and still feel) about seeing the feeble Jean-Luc Picard stand over Kirks dead body in the end, but I will not. I would like to voice my opinion on why I think Kirk is a Legend - and we all know Legends Never Die!
I mean, even Rocky was supposed to die in the last fight of Rocky V, but they changed the script at the last minute. Then in Rocky VI all of a sudden his brain damage miraculously vanished and he was able to fight again…. If Stallone could make a Rocky VI comeback – no matter how weak the plot was and STILL have a box office hit, imagine what the creative Star Trek writers could do to bring back Kirk – especially since its Sci-Fi, and open to endless possibilities based on the unknown.
I think we can all agree that Captain James T. Kirk is the coolest captain who ever lived in any Star Trek series.
Like the traits of Picard, (Whom I thought was cool at one point) and other Captains (not worth mentioning since their Series' were a disgrace to the Star Trek Legacy), whom all exercised true devotion to his/her ship and the prime directive, disciplinary actions, compassion for his/her crew, portrayed integrity and honor, Kirk was the only Captain to possess a stronger sense of Dominating Charisma if you would call it... and we see this in Generations when Picard first meets Kirk... I don't think I'll ever look at Picard the same after seeing him in the same room as Kirk.
Unlike the other Captains, Kirk seemed to enjoy what he did, he 'had fun' (and I don't mean by reading a book, or drinking Heral Grey tea). He had a great sense of humor, made funny remarks, laughed in nearly every episode, made wise cracks, had a bit of likable arrogance, and was a lot younger then Picard or other Captains. I believe these are some of the traits that contributed to Kirk's Dominating Charisma, in any event.
In my opinion, Kirk set the precedent, and every other Captain (and series) since Kirk fell short and is not worthy of comparison.
I believe he deserves to come back at least one last time so he can have a classy ending with NO DEATH, rather than a death not even dignified for a common Ensign.
Choose Wisely Paramount

| I sure do agree with you Joose, unfortunately, it may be to late for Bill to play Kirk again live action-wise. Bill was in his early sixties when Kirk was murdered by paramount. The shame of it is that Bill could probably have played Kirk again on screen 2 or 3 more times since then but paramount has let 13 years go to waste. What a travesty of justice that is against the old line trek fan base. Of course, Bill could simply lend his voice to an animated Kirk which would make the age issue moot in my opinion. When I think of the wasted opportunities that the misguided paramount studio just chucked out the window with a Kirk resurrection story that would have made for a movie blockbuster PLUS being able to build upon the Kirk character in subsequent movies, well, my blood just boils. Paramount, to quote actor Sam Shepard as Chuck Yeager in 1983`s The Right Stuff, really screwed the pooch. |

Welcome to the forum Joose. I whole heartedly agree with what you and Morgram said, but what can we do? I enjoy all of the Star Trek series, but Kirk is by far my favorite Captain. He will always have a special place in my heart.

Yup, there is plenty of good old Captain Kirk already in the can.
I can live with that. |

YES! FINALLY SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS STAR TREK AND ITS CAPTAINS! Welcome to the board! I think most of the Captains after Kirk flailed in comparison...but I won't get into that now... |

I like Doc's avatar, and the only reason that Damon can never be Kirk is because he didn't get the chance.
Good luck finding someone else of Matt's caliber. |

Good luck finding someone else of Matt's caliber. | Hey Chuck! Did you hear that Damon was in OKC for the premier of his new Bourne Identity movie. He donated the proceeds to the Bethany Children's Convelescence Center, a hospital for children with special needs. That center isn't too far from where I live. I've visited there when I was in youth group. They do need the money and that was a really nice thing that Damon did for them. |

I hadn't heard. That was a wonderful thing to do.
You know, I've always wondered about the rabid objection to Damon as Kirk. It goes far beyond the age thing.
I think certain groups want to feel responsible for choosing their own Kirk, even if he isn't the best candidate.
Sometimes I think certain people believe they own the Captain, other's opinions be damned.
I'm not referring to you, Daisy. |

I wasn't really objecting to Damon so much as far as his acting skills are concerned. I've seen other work of his and he's good. The age requirements and the fact that Bill wasn't to be a part of the film is what stuck in my craw. If they can get a credible actor of the right age limit and have a way of putting Bill in the movie, then I'm all for it. It's just a slap in the face to Bill to be excluded, unless they've changed their minds AGAIN..*sigh*. |

Chuck,
I think that Matt Damon is a fine actor. He would most likely do a marvelous job portraying Kirk. The reason that I had a problem with it was because I was certain that it was only a rumor. I saw Bill at a Star Trek convention in New Jersey last November. Bill said on stage that it was only a rumor, and that Damon was not being considered for the role of Kirk. That is why I got so upset everytime someone mentioned Damon being the new Kirk. I didn't want to quote what Bill had said. It seems for some reason Bill wants to keep quiet about it. I suppose that JJ Abrams and the writers have asked Bill not to talk about the new film. They are trying to keep us all guessing about it. All of the rumors and speculation make for good advertising. |

Ok, I understand your position T.K.
Mostly I have a problem with the people who were trashing Damon for no good reason, like he insulted their Mother. |
