VETERAN Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy is making a comeback in his old role of Mr Spock.

Nimoy, 76, will come out of retirement for the latest film version of the sci-fi series which started on TV in 1966.

And he may be joined in Star Trek XI by William Shatner, 76, the original Captain Kirk.

Nimoy, who last played the logical, pointy-eared alien in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 17 years ago, said: “People have been asking me why I’m doing this movie.

“I think the answer is obvious. We have a great director and a wonderful script. It was logical.”

At a convention in San Diego, California, Nimoy greeted Star Trek fans with a Vulcan salute.

He told them: “This is really going to be a great movie. And I don’t say things like that lightly.”

In the new film, directed by JJ Abrams, Nimoy will play the old Spock while newcomer Zachary Quinto will play him as a young man.

The two actors bear an uncanny resemblance to each other.

Star Trek XI will bring fans back to where it all started for Spock and his pal James T Kirk.

It is due to be released at the end of next year.

There is a certain similarity.

I take back all my initial reservations about Zachary. I had never heard of him before, and only glimpsed a bad photograph of him. But, I am now convinced that he is perfect for the role. His resemblance is uncanny.

Hopefully he can act, too. The actor that played the Vulcan on Voyager was awful.

I think that is worth giving them a chance. Mr. Nimoy seems to be a good judge of scripts, so who knows?... They just might pull it off.

As I said in an earlier thread, I am trying to stay neutral and as unbiased as possible. I really want to see what these young folks can do.

There are so many Star Trek novels that would make great episodes or full movies. Plus, there are so many books and scripts that could be written for future adventures.

It is far too soon to let Star Trek go by way of Jules Verne and disappear into the dusty closets of time.
