Nimoy to Reprise Spock Role in Trek Film
July 27, 2007 7:29 AM EDT
SAN DIEGO - Leonard Nimoy isn't through with Spock yet. The 76-year-old actor will don his famous pointy ears again to play the role in an upcoming "Star Trek" film due out Christmas 2008.
"This is really going to be a great movie. And I don't say things like that lightly," Nimoy told a gathering of 6,500 fans Thursday at Comic-Con, the nation's largest pop-culture convention.
He greeted the crowd with a Vulcan salute.
Nimoy was joined by the newly named young Spock, "Heroes" star Zachary Quinto, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Nimoy.
Both Spocks were introduced by the film's director and co-producer, J.J. Abrams.
"This is a series I loved as a kid," Abrams said, acknowledging that he was "more of a 'Star Wars' kid than a 'Star Trek' kid."
"This matters so much to so many people," he said. "I'm honored to be here and do this."
While the character of Captain Kirk has yet to be cast, Abrams said that William Shatner, who played the role in the original TV series, would likely also have a part in the film.
"It has to be worthy, of him and of you," Abrams told fans, adding that production is slated to begin in November.
One fan asked Nimoy what he thought of his "replacement."
"It was logical," the actor said dryly. He then closed with Spock's classic line: "Live long and prosper." |

Daisy...
From what I've heard, Nimoy is playing an OLDER Spock in the movie...not entirely sure how it fits in with everything...
BTW: I was totally excited when they revealed the poster, but its kind of freaking lame, isn't it? I also saw a larger clip of it, and, along with STXI, which is on the bottom half, it's advertising Abrams' new movie Cloverfield, I think, on the top half, with the Statue of Liberty...and what does that have to do with ST? It makes no sense! Why not devote a WHOLE poster to STXI? I mean, it's just black letters and stars...no Enterprise...NOT EXCITING. Abrams has ONE chance to make ST great, and NOW is the time. I SINCERELY HOPE THAT WILL IS IN THE MOVIE, and I cannot accept another Kirk. I don't understand why Abrams has FAILED to cast someone as Kirk yet, if they ABSOLUTELY MUST have another guy as Kirk. There is still time, though, and that is what scares me most, because this movie can go in either direction: Blockbuster with Bill, or Total Failure. I HONESTLY don't want it to be a failure, and I DEFINITELY want Bill in it!
Abrams: YOU'D BETTER GET IN TOUCH WITH BILL!!!!!!!!
Bill: YOU'D BETTER ACCEPT!!!!!!!! SAVE US FROM THE TORTURE OF HAVING SOMEONE ELSE PLAY YOU AS KIRK!!!! AND WE ALL KNOW THAT YOU WANT THE ROLE...SO JUST DO ITTTTT!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH ABRAMS...HE STILL WANTS YOU IN THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!
As Abrams has said, it is hard competing with TOS because, let's face it, it was FREAKING AMAZING. I don't think that the TOS-era can EVER be redone. If you can't redo it, freaking LEAVE IT ALONE. Kirk was nothing less than PERFECT, and I believe that if Will is not cast, it will be a total slap in the face for him and us. So I'm crossing my fingers and hoping, but that's all that I can do. It's still very early. Of course, if they don't cast him, I'll be really upset, but who wouldn't be? I'm sure by now (almost 13 years) that starship in the sky has come up with amazing technology and the ST crew are capable of resurrecting Kirk.
I'm sure that Will doesn't want a cameo, and if you already played the leading role...who would accept that? There very well might be flashbacks and flashforwards, in which case Bill will have to be cast, but how minute the parts, I have no idea. If Will plays someone else, IT JUST WON'T WORK. HE IS JAMES T. KIRK! I think it is unfair that they're leaving Will out, when he MADE the character. As you can see, Nimoy looks happy in his picture with Quinto. THIS is what we want for Shatner! WE WANT HIM TO HAVE A ROLE--AND NOT JUST ANY ROLE--A DAMN GOOD ONE! PREFERABLY THAT OF KIRK. Abrams must know that without Shatner AND Nimoy IT WON'T WORK. This is why he wants Shatner, but he says the role has to be fitting for him, because he is such a phenomenal actor. I hope for the movie's sake, they redo the script to fit Shatner in. After all, although I love Nimoy, ST isn't ALL about him. It is more about Kirk.
Okay...enough of my rant... Sorry...had to get it all out. |

Here is a picture of Bill when he was younger. I have to admit that boy Todd Masterson does bear a stricking resemblence to Bill. If indeed they are doing a movie about their younger years he would be good for the part. I have seen this picture of Todd on myspace.

 | A young Bill Shatner had stage experience. That`s a tad different from today`s young Hollywood beefcake types. |

| I have seen Todd Masterson on myspace talking about wanting to play the role of Kirk. I don't know anything about him other than that. I don't know what kind of acting experience he has, if any. I just think that he at least resembles a young Shatner. |

There is a video of Todd doing some stuff on his myspace. But, lets compare the two look wise:
Not too far off I think... Same height, same build, same look almost.

For being 33yrs old he does look more youthful than Damon. And he's classically trained like Bill. Who knows, maybe he'll get a shot at playing the part. The more I look at the picture the more I can see a resemblance. Then again it's like Joe's optical illusions. I don't have to cross my eyes with this one. That's just my opinion, though. Others probably won't see the same thing, though |

| They're not going to cast Kirk based on resemblance to Shatner. That is certainly part of it, but they need a great actor. As for J.J.'s potential backpeddling, I would guess they've been working on ideas for Shatner's Kirk probably on and off. As for the fandom explosion, that was in fact due to Bill's emotional response in just three instances, a video of a radio interview, his Shatnervision comment, and the Cherry Hill appearance. Considering how secretive they are being about this film, I'm not surprised they've left Bill in the dark. |

Bill's comments during his interview at the Late Late Show indicate that he understands the storytelling challenge in bringing back the dead elder Kirk. Fortunately, sci-fi makes for creative solutions -- which needn't belabor old Kirk's predicament, as plausibility isn't a function of onscreen time or detail.
As Nimoy said to the Toronto Sun, just after he got the call from Paramount, last year: "They might possibly want Bill and I to set up the story as a flashback".
If this is the case, only the lead-in (and, perhaps, the lead-out) portion of the current script need be edited to add Bill's part, and this can be done later in the production schedule. The main story, about young Kirk and Spock, wouldn't require rework.

He does look at least ten years younger than thirty three and with a bit of CGI tweaking, I am sure they could get Todd Masterston to look like a young Bill. For the first time, I am actually optimistic about this movie and hope that JJ and Leonard have something up their sleeves regarding Kirk being resurrected. |

Oh, that I do know. I've seen some of Todd's work and its pretty good. Also, he is a big fan of TOS. Although thats not a main reason, he has I'm sure studied Shatner as Kirk. Its up to Paramount, but I think Todd is a good candidate. Now, if they could just find out about him, haha.

 | I would not necessarily oppose Bill & Leonard in some sort of prologue/epilogue thing if it amounted to more then just a lousy 5 or 10 minutes of screen time. If not then the hell with it. Why should Bill lend paramount any aid in bailing out their trek franchise if they`re only going to give him a lousy 5 or 10 minutes? |

I think that he looks like a young Kirk would and could very well play the part. What do you guys think?
-Caitlin | A ladyboy`s dream come true. |
I've seen him on myspace campaigning for the role. |
I think he looks more like a young Wil Wheaton. Can this kid actually act, or is he just good at preening and campaining? |
