Monks Pray for Doomed Bull Shambo
LONDON - Hindu monks at a rural monastery chanted and prayed for a miracle on Thursday as veterinary officials planned to slaughter a sacred bull infected with tuberculosis.
The plight of Shambo, a bull at the Skanda Vale monastery in Wales, was captured in real-time drama as the monastery launched an Internet campaign to save his life. A Webcast called Moo Tube was tracking the movements of the flower-garlanded bull in his hay-filled shrine.
Shambo was given a reprieve last week when a Welsh judge ordered local authorities to reconsider their decision to kill the bull, considered sacred in the Hindu faith. But the Court of Appeal in London reversed that decision on Monday, ruling that killing him would be justified to prevent the disease's spread.
A veterinary official and two police officers came on Thursday morning to take the bull away, but were met at the monastery's locked gates by monks who demanded that they show a court warrant. The officials left to obtain the paperwork.
Monks warned that removing the bull would be difficult even if the officials get the proper documents.
"They will have to physically desecrate a temple to get him," said Brother Michael, one of the monks. "He's locked here and we will be having an act of worship in front of where he is."
Regulations stipulate that cattle suspected of carrying bovine tuberculosis be slaughtered; the disease can be spread to other cattle, to deer and in rare cases to humans.
But Hindus revere cattle and argued that killing Shambo would violate their religious rights.
"This is about the freedom of human beings to express their religious values," said another monk, Brother Alex. "We can't be party to the destruction of life."
The monastery said it could keep Shambo isolated to prevent the TB spreading. Brother Michael also said a charity in India had offered to take Shambo, but that authorities had declined permission. |

Well, I'm a sucker for animals, so I'd say if there are places and people who are willing to keep Shambo safe and isolated so the TB doesn't spread, then the government ought to butt out. JMO

Oh, yes, of course! Gosh that's been a long time ago. Took a while to drag it up from the memory banks. |

Joe Flynn played Captain Wallace B. Binghamton to the hilt. And I bet he loved every minute of it. |

| Diseased animals should not be transported and kept alive. It's too dangerous. |

You can mention that to the monks but I don't think they'll understand. |

This is a terrible situation...you all KNOW I love and fight for animals, but Bovine TB is HIGHLY contagious, and then, though some Scientists say there is no trans-specieal transfer of disease...it CAN happen with TB.
Humane Release of Bull OR TB spreading through the ranks of the Monks...
Hmmmm...BULL-MONKS....
Well, let's think, if it spreads and kills all the Monks, there will no longer be a functioning Temple ...
I'm afraid I would let Shambo go to Hindu Heaven |

| Can you believe these London officials. Local muslims can do whatever they want but the local bureaucrats stomp on the rights of peace-loving hindus. |

If the animal is in any distress, then it should be humanely put down, irregardless of religious beliefs. Perhaps the monks themselves can do it in a special ritual ceremony.
I would hate to think that an animal had to suffer because of a human belief.
After all, the animal is NOT Hindu, the humans who hold him captive ARE. What about the animal's religious rites? |
