This question sounds perhaps strange in your ears ?

It sure is strange to me !!!

Here on the tele everybody congratulates the APK with re-election. Why ??
-Is it because, the APK is NOT religious? Religion becomes more and more important in this country !!!
- Is it because, they are democratic? They are not democratic at all !!! Currently is almost every important organisation headed by a AKP man (not a woman) !!!

I gave my vote for the first time and hoped for the best. Yet wasting my time.

So lads and lasses in the States & Europe, do tell me: why does everybody loves this gouvernement.

Ger

I must admit, I don't know a whole lot about your country either. Our news media here is very biased. It's all about our country, and not much about the rest of the world---unless there's a plane crash, natural disaster, etc. It's sad, really......

Hi Littlestar,

The modern parts of cities like Istanbul, Ankara or Izmir are like any other city in the West. But a minority.
More and more women are wearing a head coverage. Koran-lessons become more important in the life of 5/6-years old. Question of those children "why we don't have Sharia" in Turkey, because it is the law of God" we hear more and more.

Head coverage and namas at schools, although secertly.
Women losing their jobs because they are women.

An almost 2/3 share of seats in Parliament.
All provincial heads are APK.
Almost all town-mayors are APK.
and so on.

Easy, Turkey has something we want. Whether that's a strategic position on the edge of Asia or some other commodity I don't know, but there must be something. How else do you explain half the world assisting in liberating Kuwait but turning a blind eye to Zimbabwe?

Another thing to consider is that if Turkey gets admitted to the EU does that legitimise the occupation of northern Cyprus? One thing it will do is open the floodgates for terrorists into the rest of Europe.

Not necessarily Muslim, but people hiding behind the religion, yes.

Rolling Eyes The U.S.A. and EU don't want powerful and contemporary Turkey. Otherwise they can not play their silly games over Turkey.

But don't worry Ger, Turkey will stay as contemporary and powerful country, because there are so many citizens who follow Atatürk.

I was going to make a crack about it being free-range with no growth hormones...but I see I am too late.

Ah well.

No idea what is happening in Turkey right now. So busy, I can barely keep up with what the US of A is doing! Shocked

Thanks MG...I'm glad to learn...embarassing as it is to admit my lack of knowledge Embarassed

Is there a Political figure, of current day, that would continue Ataturks formation?

Or has the country reverted back to Islamic ways?

Interesting thread, thanks for posting it.

I've only heard one news report regarding the election. It hinted that while the current government might be trying to appear secular, that in truth they had some strong leanings towards sharia law. But, our news is often biased, so it is good to hear what is going on from someone who lives there.

I think most of us are very uninformed about what is going on.
