Ban Dogs from City athletic fields
Ordinance Would Ban Dogs From City Athletic Fields
Officials Say Dogs Ruin Fields, Disrespect Cemeteries
POSTED: 5:57 pm EDT July 24, 2007
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- A proposed city ordinance would ban dogs from local athletic fields and cemeteries, but some pet owners are saying they're being punished for the actions of a few.
Dog owner Bill Brennan said that he enjoys taking his three dogs to Steven's Park because they don't have enough room in his yard for them to get good exercise.
"I do clean up after the dogs, but I've noticed it, too. There's a lot of people who don't," he said. "So the few are going to ruin it for the rest who are responsible dog owners."
Officials said that even responsible owners who pick up after their animals can't clean everything.
"The urine makes dead spots in the fields. It ruins the fields," said Charles DePrima of the Manchester Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Department. "You know, as a dog owner myself, I hope everyone else would be responsible."
Most parks already have posted signs warning that failing to pick up after a dog risks a $25. The new proposal is designed to keep children safe on the fields and show respect in the cemeteries, officials said.
John Turcotte said he walks his dog, Millie, every day in the Valley Street Cemetery.
"We walk about every day during the week. We never bother anybody," Turcotte said. "We're careful about cleaning up after ourselves. These are public spaces, and they should be used by the public."
Under the proposal, dogs would still be allowed in other public parks on leashes. |

Now I can make a fortune selling "Pee Pods" (TM by DOC) for dogs.

It must be a plot of Pampers to create a new market for their product.
Pamper for donkeys and now for dogs. |

I don't think I'll mind a dog peeing on my stone when I'm dead....... |

Once I'm gone... I'm not going to care if a dog does a dookie on my grave... since I'm pretty much doing the same thing by decomposing within the same plot of ground...
Fertilizing!

Oh, yeah, I forgot about those. Now that you mentioned it, my inlaws used to have them for whenever their female Beagle had her doggy period.
I can only imagine the carnage that would happen to my body if I dared to try and put one on one of my cats. |

I agree wih this: we have a park in our city and there are lots of geese: they ruin the grass. Dog poo in comparison is not as acid as bird one.
I always carry doggie clean-up bags with me when I walk my dog.
However what of the wild life? There are foxes even going into people's garden at night, and rats soil as well. All animals do and I am sure a few humans do as well given the chance.
Saying that, it's rather nasty to walk in a big mess from a dog left behind by a careless owner. But what is silly is that some people put the mess in a bag then leave the bag on the ground . It's far more polluting that the mess itself which is biodegradable. Bags are dangerous for the wild life.
And in a cemetery I think a dog should be on a leash. If only not to upset would be relatives of a deseased.

Of course the first and easiest option by legislatures is going to be to ban something. Saves them from actually having to think of a solution.
Assuming for the moment that these particular city parks don't have massive goose problems (like all the other city parks nationwide). And that it isn't the dog *behavior* that is causing problems (ie: harassing other park residents, not listening to their handlers etc...) Instead of banning dogs running off leash, why not make an "off leash" dog park next to it?
Our big city park has that. You still have to scoop the poop, but the dogs get to run around and have a great time, and the rest of the park is "on leash". Everybody wins! |
