I remember some great movies from Oz over the last 20 years or so, that really put Australia on the map,but recently nothing much seems to have come from the land Down Under recently , ( except soap operas).
1970's : Mad max
1980's :Crocodile Dundee, Dead End Drive In,
1990's: Adventures of Pricilla Queen Of The Desert,Shine,Strictly Ballroom, Muriels Wedding.
2000's...?
what happened ..?
"In the near future, drive-in theatres are turned into concentration camps for the undesirable and unemployed. The prisoners don't really care to escape because they are fed and they have a place to live which is, in most cases, probably better than the outside"

You did not mention the mad max sequel "the road warrior", my favourite australian movie. I love it when the gyro captain (Bruce Spence) when asked if his gyro craft might be able to carry more than one person, he turns to this cute little blonde (Arkie Whiteley) and says "possibly". I love that scene! |

How could you miss the best Australian film ever, The Dish. If you haven't seen it go rent it NOW!
From IMDB (the worlds 2nd best website)
In the days before the July 19, 1969 space mission that marked humankind's first steps on the moon, NASA was working with a group of Australian technicians who had agreed to rig up a satellite interface. That the Aussies placed the satellite dish smack dab in the middle of an Australian sheep farm in the boondocks town of Parkes was just one of the reasons that NASA was concerned. Based on a true story, The Dish takes a smart, witty, comical look at the differing cultural attitudes between Australia and the U.S. while revisiting one of the greatest events in history.

Been into "Parks" just a short drive from here where I live . they have the props used in the Movie "The Dish" a lovely little town, and it is unusual to see a Dish in this setting .
I think the industry switched to making special effects and international movies where a high percentage of Australian actors have supporting roles.

The Aussie film industry is in much better shape than the British. In fact, "Superman Returns", "The Matrix" series, "Moulin Rouge".... were all shot in Australia. Better tax breaks than in the UK; although Brown has suggested changing things. Things have got so bad in the UK, that even James Bond was threatened to move elsewhere, during the production of "Casino Royale". The lastest Indiana Jones movie, will break from tradition and not be made in the UK. Thank God for "Harry Potter"!
A lot of productions are now made in Eastern European countries, such as Romania and the Czech Republic, where massive costs can be saved on a production. Even Egypt is starting to open up for business, with a new international studio lot built in Cairo.
Talking of which, Baz Lurhman's next major movie, starring Nicole Kidman, is an epic called, "Australia", all shot in Oz. |
