I was trying to find the book DianaG told me about in my PM, but of course I can't get to it right now. But I found this article when googling for it.

http://www.spcm.org/Journal/spip.php?ar ... #forum1867

What do you think?

I linked it b/c it's pretty long. But I can post if you like.

I realize we have no "common frame of reference here", but I'm curious as to what folks have heard or think about coming back from the dead and the afterlife. Question

I've heard of a number of people who have been declared dead, and then returned. Personally, I don't think it is possible for anyone but them to know if what they are saying is true.

I do believe there is an afterlife. And I do believe that God is love in a sense that none of us will truly understand until we stand in God's presence.

These stories are very interesting to me....

I've heard from those who saw the comfort and light
and from those who saw torment......others nothing....

I'd love to see an objective blind study....I'd buy that book... Idea

I saw some compelling stuff recently that Near Death Experiences have a scientific explanation.

People that were put through crazy military testing and passed out had similar "white light" and even seeing things....

It seems very plausible that such things are your brain's way of dealing with intense stress/pain/etcetera.

I believe in God and certainly believe in an afterlife....but I'm not sold on NDE's. Seems perfectly explainable.

Edit: The Oklahoma centrifuge study is what I watched something about, which created NDE-like results.

there is no way a legitimate double blinded study could be done as there is no way to quantify what happens. you could measure metabolic criteria but the real data about subject experience is anecdotal and qualitative, cannot be measured.

also the sci. method requires reproduceability--can the experiment be re-created under similar or diff circumstances, which makes it an ethical question about the treatment of subjects. Do you induce an NDE, how do you do it if so, etc.

but look at reproduceability another way. we can all look fwd to participating in this experience eventually Razz

Myself, I drowned when I was a kid and they had to bring me back. I recall nothing in btw. Wink

but the going for the light thing sure sounds like another experience--birth Wink

"How long can different organs live without oxygen?

Question: This question relates to an apnic individual without the assistance of CPR. The organs are to be used for donation purposes. Consider the liver, kidneys, etc. (Everyone knows that the brain starts dying in 3-5 minutes)

Answer:
Same for all organs. They can't live without oxygen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
depends if they are kept on ice or not.
in room temperature not much more than some minutes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pipe Organs can live indefinately without oxygen..."

Now. NDE (As Littlestar experience) is possible. Coming back from the dead not possible (in this dimension)... Unless you knock back a couple BECK'S with Harry and myself and watch this.

If a blind study is impossible, I'd settle for an anecdotal study...

From those who were certified to have had a NDE, and
not just someone wanting attention...

I find these stories fascinating...

I don't see them as purely physical....

IMO, if they were, you wouldn't get differing outcomes
such as comfort, torment, and nothing...

If they were, lives wouldn't be changed so dramatically....

Idea

Well I would think that if you thought you had a brush with the hereafter, or with God....it wouldn't matter if it was real or not....it could still change your life.

If I have a 'vision' of meeting a loved one and be assured everything's going to be alright, and I come out of the experience treasuring life and being a better person....maybe ignorance is bliss. It could have been a NDE or it could have been my brain triggering that reaction.

I would think most people who had such an experience and "changed" probably don't want to know if there's a scientific explanation or not.

This is all just IMO....hell, most everything we post here is just
our opinion....lol

I think God makes infrequent close encounters...

I don't think they are physical, verbal, emotional...etc...as we know it...

I do think they are real, and the one who experiences it will
swear by it...

I doesn't have to be as drastic as a NDE.

If you ask me, you can learn more from exercise, eating right, and prayer...

And I agree completely, especially with that last line.

I just think that a thing (the brain) that can conjure all manner of crazy dreams on a nightly basis is just as capable of creating similar things when you are in massive distress.

I believe in God and believe he influences us in various ways. I just think it's more subtle than NDE's, which are sort of like the supposed 'alien encounters' in that they have a sameness to them and an appeal of people wanting them to be real therefore they MUST be.

I agree that NDE some may or may not be explained as a result of your brain doing stuff while you are clinically dead and it's still twitching. Though, b/c we don't know much about the brain yet, we won't be able to explore this avenue for quite some time. I personally, am very interested to see info about the stuff that *won't* be explained along the lines of "when you're 'dead' you have really wacked out dreams".

THAT will be the interesting stuff I think!

I'm more curious myself, though, on the "not so NDE". The one's where you're dead for several hours or days, and then come back. Those are the interesting ones for me! Cool

My folks sort of "operate" a church....

Decades ago some families joined together to start what is called a
"Full Gospel" church. The term basically means the Bible isn't a set
of anecdotes and made up stories to learn from, they believe it happened...

They also believe God is alive and well and able to help you today....

I do too...

Well, after the decades, people went their own ways and my folks were
the last two standing....My mom used to preach, but she's 75 years old
and I've had to beat her with a lead pipe to get to start stepping down....

I've had the pleasure of watching all these fine Christians work together..Rolling Eyes

I have to tell you, one of God's biggest problems, is his people...Idea
