I wouldn't know. This is the only ST related site that I am active on.
I don't go to the bubblegum sites. |

| Not much smack about Shatner personally. There are a lot of people who don't wish to see him as Kirk again. Some have good reasons, others just hate TOS and its fans. |

TNGers don`t like Kirk because he is a mid-20th century kind of a guy instead of a tng-era girly-man...like them. You`re damn right they don`t like Kirk. Self-examination is something that I think they would rather like to try and avoid. |

Bubblegum means a place where mainly teeny-boppers hang out. It is not necessarily a bad place, just a place where mostly younger folks are with their own "young folks" agenda.
The reason I come here is there are plenty of "old farts" like me. OOPS! Maybe I shouldn't have used that expression with Vito around. |

Well, some of those people simply never got into TOS. They grew up with TNG, and TOS cast were out of the movies by the time they became Trek fans. Then again, I know some people who only liked DS9. Gene Roddenberry dreamed of a human race where stupid things like a TV show wouldn't cause problems. If that isn't ironic, I don't know what is! ha ha ha.
Seriously though, there is merit to saying that if this movie is to be successful, Abrams needs to shed all that could be considered "old Trek" and start fresh. There is a difference of opinion as to whether the role made the man, or the man made the role. I of course know that Shatner made Kirk. Nobody else was going to scream KAHN quite the way he did.
This is a disagreement that I think reaches well beyond Star Trek. There are people who feel that remakes and reboots are totally fine, and they enjoy it. They are the same people who adored the Star Wars prequels. These people are not the ones who helped Star Trek live for 40 years. No way. They find fault in too many areas, complain endlessly, and attack everybody else as fanboys or geeks. If it were up to them, TOS would have been rebooted 16 times by now.
It's like in art, if you were to reproduce the Mona Lisa in your own way, the artworld would laugh at you. They'd say quit mooching off a masterpiece and create your own work. Or in baseball, if you think Barry Bonds' records are genuine compared to Aaron or Maris. If you're someone like me, and feel TOS was terrific and close to perfect, wouldn't this movie only result in a disappointment? |
