I order them from England cause of how they change the British slang to American words in the US publications. So I don't have it yet, but I got the e-mail yesterday that it's in the mail.

Well, to start with there's the story behind the stories. The welfare mother rises above her situation by her own gumption. Then there's a lot about the books to like. You can see her writing improve with every book - like she's growing with Harry. And there's a message in them that only adults pick up - namely, that bigotry is wrong. If you look closely at Voldemort you can see he is basically Hitler. Voldemort is half muggle (non-magical human), half wizard. Hitler's maternal grandmother was Jewish. Voldemort hates anyone who's not a "pureblood" (wizard and witch mother and father, no mixing with muggles). Hitler hated anyone who was Jewish. Voldemort wants to kill off all those he doesn't see as "pure." Hitler wanted to kill off anyone he didn't see as "pure."

There's other scenes in the books that teach the same lesson. Hagrid being hated and persecuted for being a half giant. Hermione being pesecuted for her parents both being muggles. Harry and Ron go to the dance with girls who are obviously of Indian parentage and no one making a fuss. (And in the book Angelina, the girl that goes with one of Ron's brothers is black, but in the movie they cast a white girl.) The good guys don't judge people based on parentage or skin color. They judge on what's inside their heart. The bad guys judge on parentage (though not skin color). Most kids want to be like Harry. To be like Harry means you can't judge people on a stupid reason like not being a "pureblood."

That's an interesting point, about the slang being changed.Do you think that this changes the feel of the story?.Maybe that with British slang it would be harder to understand.

I seem to remember the title of the first book/movie was changed slightly for the U.S because of possible confusion.

I bought the book about 6pm on Saturday for the excellant price of Ģ5 (that's about $8-9) Am currently two thirds through and so far, excellant.

I came across the Potter books when the first was still on only its 3rd print run. You are right in the JKR has grown with the characters and her style has improved with each one.

I feel it cheapens the book to remove the British slang and under estimates the reader's intellegence. *I* knew what a philosopher's stone was as a child. Someone was always trying to turn Bugs Bunny into one. And they could've always just put a British to American dictionary in the back for words like "jumper" (sweater).

Finished it yesterday and then realized that I dont remember CRAP from books 5 and 6, and thus, I now find myself re-reading book five.

I got the idea to start re-reading the series from a discussion group on another board. While I'd read each one at least three times when I got it, I'd not read the collection at all and so started a couple of weeks ago with book one and am now just starting book six.

Book 7 arrived Monday and I've kept the strip on the packing which says "ATTENTION MUGGLES-DO NOT DELIVER OR OPEN BEFORE JULY 21!

Figure I'll need another week or so before I'm ready to read it as I don't read dawn to dusk. Cool

Me and the kids were at the B&N Friday at 11pm for the midnight party and finally got our books at 1:20. We weren't too high on the reserved list. Bridget's almost finished with 7. Mary's almost done with 6 (we told her she had to finish it before we would "allow her to read 7"), but I'm still at the graveyard with Hermoine and Harry on Christmas Eve. (starting Chapter 17, page 330)
Sucks when you have to work, and it interferes with the real things in life. Laughing
It's almost as though I don't want to finish it, I think I'm avoiding reading it too fast. Do you all think this is really the last of JK and Potter?
I sure hope not.
