Teachers should make more use of the skills and experiences of grandparents as working parents struggle to get involved in education, inspectors say. In a survey of 25 schools, Ofsted inspectors found grandparents had a "positive influence" on pupils' behaviour, motivation and achievement.
The schools surveyed said they wanted more advice on how to involve parents, grandparents and carers in school life. The findings follow concern that long working hours jeopardise family life.
The Ofsted report - Parents, carers and schools - found parents and carers who actively helped in school developed a better understanding of how pupils learned and how they could help their child.

| That's positively true. I volunteer alot at my kids schools and grandparent participation has become more prevalent. It's really good to see. Alot of parents don't have the luxury of staying home like I do and the grandparents are always there to volunteer and keep up with the kids educational developement and also to make a difference in the schools. It's really a welcome thing when people can do more in their retirement. Thankyou for sharing the article Britstarfan! |

I agree. Instead of these Senor Citizens hanging around malls or gambling their social security checks, by getting involved in our education institutes and instill some wisdom into our youths. I know this may have sounded blunt to some…any hoot.

Do you feel though that some Grandparents might , feel they are getting the "job" pushed on them, though?.Perhaps there are some that do not want to take part,After all some grandparents do have busy lives themselves, even if they are retired , and have already brought up their kids, and might feel it is time to be taking things easy and doing what they want to do,?, especially if the Grandparents are looking after the kids while the parent/s are not there.
I think it is a good idea in theory, as long as, the grandparents do not feel taken for granted or forced into it. |

Agree, point well made. Instead of bussing them to the casinos, bus them to school!

| Well, Britstarfan, I don't think anybody should be forced to do anything that doesn't float their boat. My parents are of the casino hopping variety, but I don't expect them to take on my kids and be something more than they want to be. I accept them and what they want to do out of genuine respect. The rest of the grandparents out there also have that choice, but it depends if they're strong enough to tell their children that. Some people get used. My kids are part and parcel of being a parent and I don't expect my parents to take them to raise. Hence the reason I don't work and make sacrifices to make sure that I stay at home and school for my kids. |

I've always liked that segment. I love it when they dressed as little old ladies. They almost sounded like cooing pidgeons when they talked amongst themselves. I remember one episode of a huge alien custard that was attacked by the old ladies and eating with spoons. Hilarious! |
