Mom says she, toddler kicked off plane

A woman said she and her toddler son were kicked off a plane after she refused a flight attendant's request to medicate her son to get him to quiet down and stop saying "Bye bye, plane."

Kate Penland, of suburban Atlanta, said she and her 19-month-old son, Garren, were flying from Atlanta to Oklahoma last month on a Continental Express flight that made a stop in Houston.

As the plane was taxiing in Houston en route to Oklahoma, "he started saying 'Bye, bye plane,' Penland told WSB-TV in Atlanta. The flight attendant objected, she said.

"At the end of her speech, she leaned over the gentleman beside me and said, 'It's not funny anymore. You need to shut your baby up,'" Penland told WSB-TV in Atlanta.

When Penland asked the woman if she was joking, she said the stewardess replied, "You know, it's called baby Benadryl."

"And I said, 'Well, I'm not going to drug my child so you have a pleasant flight,'" Penland told the TV station.

Penland said other passengers began speaking up on her behalf, and the flight attendant announced they were turning around and that Penland and Garren were going to be taken off the plane.

Penland and her son were let off the plane and did not complete the trip to Oklahoma, said Kristy Nicholas, spokeswoman for Express Jet Airlines, which flies as Continental Express on behalf of Continental Airlines.

Attempts by the Associated Press to reach Penland under a telephone listing that matched her last name were unsuccessful.

"I was crying, I was upset and I was thinking, 'What am I going to do? I don't have anything with me, I don't have any more diapers for the baby, no juice, no milk," Penland told WSB.

Nicholas said, "We received Ms. Penland's letter expressing her concerns and intend to investigate its contents."

This story above Sounds a bit far fetched mind you Smile that attendant should have been on the plane I came back on 2 days after 9/11 from London.

We stopped at Singapore to pick up 300 fleeing Lebanese. (They must have thought there would be a world war, as most of us did) with about 120 children now on board:) it was like a mad house for 10 hours. I have never seen a Singaporean hostie loose her cool but on these flights that had been going on for 3 days . They must have had their fill of the extreme bad behaviour of these kids and mothers . and the men

I had one in front of me who punched her child all the way, and one over the isle who was continuously punching and nipping her kid and this behaviour was going on throughout the plane, The men you might ask where were they!!! in first class and business with the boys. unfortunately I was the only European in this huge crowd:) I could write a book about those 44 hours of how I had to get home . in this horrible time in history:)

I think it was probably going to far. Sadly, people on flights are usually less tolerant of children who are reasonably quiet, then some stupid drunk who is loud and noxious. I found this to be particularly true on flights within the US. When we were on flights with mostly Aussies, we found it to be more "family friendly".

This is bullcrap! The flight attendant should not only be fired, but arrested for attempted assault on the child, as well as harrassment!

Children make noise, regardless of what adults want.

This reminded me of the last episode of M*A*S*H, where the mother smothers her baby to keep him quiet. When people expect a child, especially a 19 month old baby to be silent, they need to check themselves into a mental health facility!

I live right next door to a youth center that is only open during the school year. Every afternoon when I come home from work, there are dozens of kids from age 6 to 16 in the 'back yard' of the youth center, most of them shouting, screaming, laughing, and having a good time. I need to unwind when I get home, and when I found out that there were going to be dozens of kids playing just a few feet from my house, I wondered how I could ever relax...now, while school is out, there is no noise coming from the youth center. I can't wait for school to start, and the sounds of happy children once again find their way into my home. I really do miss those kids. The sounds of so many happy children actually HELP me relax. With all the bad things going on in today's world, the sound of a child helps me realize that there is some things to rejoice about.

I am against frivolous lawsuits, but this time I hope the mother sues not only the flight attendant, but also the airline! Drugging a child is NOT right!!!!!

I never object to noisy babies or restless kids on planes. I think God would never let a plane go down with little babes on it Wink

Heck yes it went too far! The flight attendant should have been taking the benydril instead. She was the one making all the fuss. What a twit! She's in the wrong line of work if she's so intolerant over a little kid's chatter. They ought to fire her azz.

I bet you that the child would have stopped on his own accord when he niticed nobody was paying atention to him.
Or a cuddle from his mum might have quiet him down.
Forcing sedatives on a child is not right.
You never know he might have seen a gremlin on the wing as a result.....

Sorry couldn't help that one. Maybe I am the one needing a sedative.

Well, I'm going to be unpopular - while I disagree with drugging the child, I do think the mom should've told him to stop already. Having delt with for the past 7 years parents at the library who believe that disapline is bad for children, I have little tolerance for noisy kids.

I mean, parents just don't tell their kids "NO" anymore. I was in Trader Joe's the other day where one boy kept pulling his sister around - she was wearing those blasted "Heelys" (those things should be outlawed!) all over the store with no reguard for others' safety. Even when people told their mom "That is NOT safe" she really didn't do anything. I yelled at them several times to behave themselves because someone had to - their mother was too much of a whimp. They were going to break someone's bones.

We weren't there. We don't know the whole story. Maybe the mom's a whimp who is raising a future Heely-wearing brat and never tells him "No."

Hold them down until the bubbles stop, that's the method....

Oh......

Hang on....no.....sorry...

That's goblins. Our mistake.

You're not allowed to criticise children or small dogs unless you have never been either. We haven't, so here goes.

Child bad.
Evil airline worse.
We suspect story blown out of all proportion.

But a bit harsh, even by our standards, and we intend to destroy you all.
