All day long, I've been trying to figure out why today's date rings a bell. It just hit me. There was a 19th c. Reverend who calculated the age of the Earth by counting back from all the begats in the Bible. He came up with 4004 BC as the year of the creation. Somehow he got a date, too: Oct. 23. I heard at one time this is when the term starts at Cambridge University, so maybe that had something to do with it. But, there ya go.
So for any fundamentalist creationists of the 19t century variety on the BBS tonight: Happy Birthday, World!

| Jeez, you'd think He'd have started on New Year's Day, or maybe Christmas Day, wouldn't you? I suppose that feller figured in the discrepancies involved in having to switch from Gregorian years to Julian years at the appropriate point... |

The nearest I can tell, 4004BC wasn't when the earth was created. It was when Adam was created. You can't determine the age of the earth from people begating. Only the age of the people.IMHO.

True. My oversimplification. There are some references to kings' reigns relative to Creation that were also used.
Joains--sure, if that's what you believe.

Bishop Usher undoubtably added, or subtracted rather, the 5 days preceeding Adam's creation to fix his October 23rd date. However, he assumed a whole lot about human generations and procreation, and ignored a whole lot about geology. |

Wonder if it was before, or after breakfast.

Makes sense. Can't have offerings until people are created.
My bad.
